It's a carving fork, for cutting roasts etc. I don't think it's old, I know they still sell them today.

Thanks. I always just stab it with a fork - the two pronged kind with the handles that come with the carving knives.

We have one which I use now and then but I agree with Bill, I think a 2 pronged fork works better.
