Hello, I am going to take a guess without seeing it. Sounds like a Machinist's Jack Screw. Here is a link to an ebay item that might be it. Wow , without a photo and you nailed it.
I'm not a machinist as you can tell, fixed a lot a of cars though.
I figured the screw was to lock it , but not sure why the base is shaped like that.
I guess it fits the lathe bed?
