Brace Who's Is ??
« on: January 12, 2017, 02:12:17 PM »
Hello boys !  Picked up this brace with a square drive hole. No makers mark on it that I can find.
has small keeper on a pivot.
Any ideas on who made it ? Nice tool.

Thanks    Brian

Look real close on the frame and chuck for any partial name or patent date.  They are often very worn on these old braces.  It looks like it should be patented.  If you find anything, I can look it up in Ron Pearson's brace patent book that I have.

Yes. Only bits I've seen like that are center bits.

Hit the brace with some light steel wool, still dont find a makers mark on it.
Ah well, it will look good hanging on the wall.
Of course, now I am looking for some tapered bits to try in it...

Thanks

I flipped through all the brace patents in Pearson's book until I got to where all the brace chuck had jaws and the bits did not have notches.  I did not see any like it.

Very good workmanship, but no names suggests it may be a one off, made just for the maker.  The ones that used the notched bits usually had a spring loaded pawl that grabbed the bit right?   The hex head bolt holding the wood grip on suggests owner made perhaps I would have grabbed it for sure.
