Any Help on This One
« on: October 24, 2016, 07:02:20 PM »
My newest acquisition is a 3 jaw quick adjust wrench that is partially marked TRIPL???. 2 Silvanus Hussey patent dates can be seen and a third earlier patent date can be partially seen. The Hussy dates are Jan 20, 1891 for patent 444,937 and May 24, 1892 patent 475,450. The third patent date is listed first on the wrench which leads me to believe it is an earlier patent and is June something, something. The Hussey patents are for combination nut and pipe wrenches with 3 jaw arrangements, the third jaw being on the side of the head of the wrench. Like the seller I am guessing the first patent listed on the wrench is for a quick adjust wrench that was patented in June prior to 1891. This leads me to patent 65,679 patented June 11 1867 by Dennis Kellogg, patent 320,357 patented June 16, 1885 by Jacob Huber (Crosby Rapid Transit Wrench) and patent 364,765 patented June 14, 1887 by Rufus B. Marks. None of these patents exactly fit the quick adjust feature but they have features close to this wrench.
The quick adjust feature and fine adjustment is accomplished by the large adjusting nut. The nut rotation is limited to 180 degrees of rotation. There is a stop that is built into the nut that keeps the nut from rotating past the intended stop positions. The main shaft of the wrench is threaded on one of the short sides of the rectangle shaped main bar. The lower movable jaw has extensions that straddle the main bar and extend just below the adjusting nut.
Has anyone else seen one of these or have one in their collection that is more clearly marked? The Hussey patents are listed on DATAMP as not known to have been produced. I believe the Kellogg and Huber patents are also listed as not known to have been produced.
The one picture attached shows the stop for the nut rotation. If you notice there is a top on the bottom of the nut but it doesn't really contact anything on the movable jaw. is a 3 jaw

Any help in figuring this one out would be appreciated.

No more information other than 1893 West Virginia record of formation of Niagara Wrench Company at Albion, NY.  Incorporators were Hussey,  George B. L. Wilson,  John Farnsworth,  Henry S. Briggs,  Albert S. Wilson.   &  Canadian patent #38,492 which I added to DATAMP last evening.
