Last week's estate sale finds.......
« on: July 24, 2016, 12:57:36 PM »
Went to a local estate sale and came home with a real bonanza(more on that later):
First item I found was a Kennedy(I believe)small size pent roof tool box with some small items inside for $6. Has a small dent in the top that I am slowly working on;it's hard to get at because of the trays. Inside were five cardboard tubes inside of which were screwdriver bits intended to fit into some type of driver. As it turns out they fit my Yankee automatic screwdriver although they are slightly longer and don't fit inside the handle.
A nice pair of tinted American Optical safety glasses still in the case with instructions on how to change the lenses. Some miscellaneous Allen wrenches;a keyhole saw with two blades and some other still unidentifiable stuff(will try and post pics of those in the whatsit forum).
I also found a pair of snap-On K-70 female head ratchets that someone had welded open end wrenches to.One was a 7/16ths and the other a 13/32nds. A dollar apiece.
Being as how my primary goal was to find knives for my 60 plus year collection I wasn't disappointed. Found four nice little knives for $10 and for some reason passed on another which led to the best part of all.
Upon reflecting I decided I probably should have bought the other knife(it was $4) I returned the next day only to discover it had been sold.To placate my misery at this event I decided to take another look around to see if I had missed anything. Found a new in the box battery charger(my old one had died and I was pricing new ones(60-70 dollars)for $7.50;marked down from $10 for the previous day. Below the battery charger on a table were a bunch of miscellaneous tools. Going through them I found two push drills;a Millers Falls and a Goodell-Pratt with all the bits and a set of five gripping screwdrivers(Blue-Point) for a dollar each and $2.50 for the set.
I also noticed a couple of knives mixed in with the tools;an old unmarked butcher knife and what looked like a linoleum knife. I vaguely remembered seeing one like it and when I read the partially obscured mark I knew just where. I quickly gathered all the stuff up;paid for it and wnet home.
The knife in question was a Marble's fish knife;the largest of three offered. It's hook blade is sharpened on both edges and it originally had a small shield with a fish on it attached to the side. The blade;though a bit rusty was nearly full and the rust cleaned off nicely using a #2 lead pencil and some mineral oil. A little oil on the wood handle and it was looking good.
A couple days later I stopped at an antique shop a friend of mine(and Marbles collector)owns to show him my find.
When he saw it his eyes lit up like a Christmas tree. He asked if I knew what it was worth. I don't have price list for them so he looked it up in his book. A mint condition example(and mine is a long way from being mint)books for $1200-$1500!!! He then offered me $100 for it right there. Apparently they were only made for a year or two circa 1907.
I don't normally buy knives to sell and told him if I ever decided to sell it I would let him know.
I posted a picture of the knife on another web site I follow and another Marbles collector offered me $300 for it! A friend of mine who has forgotten more about knives than most people will ever know said that if the shield was attached it would probably sell for $600;as is about $350.
Not a bad day considering I gave a whole SEVENTY-FIVE CENTS for it!

And Marbles pocket screwdriver tools! I'm still looking for the smaller one.
My friends call me Bob. My wife calls me a lot worse.
