Back to the scrap yard for a German Herma pipe wrench
« on: May 09, 2016, 03:36:19 PM »
Stopped by the dollar a pound scrap yard this morning and this is what followed me home. A Herma No.29 18 inch pipe wrench made in Germany, a Proto 814-HD, a cute little Oswego pipe wrench, a Bonney 727, a Vlchek, and a Barcalo box end. These tools are in perfect working order and not damaged, just a light coat of rust that rubs right off, yet someone thought they were only worth scrap.

I keep telling my wife these are only a dollar a pound, and as long as I keep my purchases to under $20 at a time I can sneak them into the shop. Well, $14 here, $8 there, over the past year well over 150 pounds of rusty old tools have followed me home just from this one metal scrap yard.... ooops.

Nice find there. I worked in a scrap metal / wrecking yard for 10 years for a good friend of mine. It was like Heaven. You would not believe the stuff people throw away. Once a guy gave us two Caterpillar D4 crawlers for the taking and both were in working condition. My friend has been in the scrap metal business since 1953 and was 15 years old when he started. Going to his place is like Dizzyland for people that like old machines, old tools, old cars/trucks, windmills, hit & miss engines and much more.

Nice haul. Which reminds me, I haven't visited the scrap yard in ages....
My friends call me Bob. My wife calls me a lot worse.

Nice wrenches

Back when I lived in Chicago I had a good buddy who did scrap/salvage/flea markets. It was always a,aging what he got, many of tools I got from him for next to nothing.
And I'm proud to be an American,
where at least I know I'm free.
And I won't forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me.
