Clear tape around the perimeter of the envelope and in a cross pattern over both faces eliminates that problem. Putting the contents in a Tyvek USPS envelope before the flat rate envelope insures nothing lost if a hole developes.

Flat-rate padded envelopes also work great. They're free, but you have to order them from USPS. They will be delivered free too.

When you realize the only humans who handled that package were tie receiving clerk and the delivery carrier it is quite an accomplishment.  The ones that get a 3rd human come in a plastic bag with an explanation printed on it blaming the machine for destroying the package they designed.

USPS can and does destroy tyvek.

Glad the tie wraps did their job.

The clerks at my local PO won't take flat rates if they have tape on the outside. Although they will sometimes put PO tape across the flap. (shrugs shoulders)

Good thing JAFE used the zip ties to keep them in place.

I always put tape on the corners of stuff when I ship the boxes. I often overtape stuff for fear of something like that and the ietam getting lost.
And I'm proud to be an American,
where at least I know I'm free.
And I won't forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me.

My wife got a plastic bag in the mail the other day and it had a piece of a cover of a catalog in it. The piece of cover still had the complete address on it so they sent what was left, a chunk of paper about 3 inches by 5 inches that is all chewed up.

I've heard the "too much tape on flat rate" crap at my PO before. I could understand if it is brown tape, but I use clear and everything is still readable.

If the gorillas and monkeys they hire,  did their job and quit bitching about it, everyone's packages would arrive safe and sound, not to mention faster.  As for the machines, I don't think at anytime a Priority mail item should even contact those machines. you pay a little higher rate for Priority mail, they should really give it priority!!

Yeah I received a flat rate once that was supposed to have a set of John Deere stamped wrenches but because of the hole in the end and because the sender did not secure the wrenches, the flat rate only held air.  No I never did see the wrenches.
