Is it just me?
« on: September 12, 2011, 08:42:44 AM »
I'm wondering why my connection to Tool Talk sometimes crawls to almost a complete stop? I have windows XP pro, on my yard sale computer, and have a 3 meg connection on DSL. Does anyone else expierence this? I just tried to load some pictres, and it locked up again.

Thanks,

Wayne

I have a P3 933mhz PC with XP and use dial up. I usually have no problems but sometimes the pictures take a hell of a long time to load.

Thanks for the response eddie. Well now, It sounds like you and me are somewhat alike, in that I just changed from dial-up, to dsl 9 months ago, and still watch Television on what I call "Poor Man's" TV, ie. an antenna verses cable TV! Lol I just thought maybe the site was having maintenance , or updates being done on it, because it only happens at a certain time of the day and week. What Say Ye Noel?

I think DSL technology may be sensitive to peak use times. I'm not positive but it would be an easy thing to research.

I have poor mans TV as well because we like to watch movies and not TV but we do have the fastest internet avail ( thats my wifes deal, I was happy with Juno dial-up at 9.99 a month ) amd I experience the same thing, its only this site and it it does not seem to matter the time of day but I will say it is getting better, used to happen more often.
Wayne if you ever want a great comp. ( the best in my opinion ) go on e-bay and buy a HP pavillion a220n desktop comp.
I bought mine nearly eight years ago and very very rarely have any problems. as a matter of fact I just bought a second one off of e-bay just because I wanted a back-up and paid 42 dollars for it and it was advertised as in like new condition which it is except it did not work.
I have been fighting the seller and e-bay pay you back if its not right deal for about a week now on that but I am kinda glad it did not work because I have learned more about comp. repair in the last week and a half than I ever though I wanted to know. Still waiting on a CD burner ( which only cost me 7 dollars on e-bay ) but once I have that this comp ( which I am using right now ) will be good as new.
Just a suggestion to anyone, I  have learned how to get service pack 3, windows 8, how to change my C-drive or hard drive, battery replacement and how to download all relevent updates if I dont want the downloaded automatically. ( which I dont because in my opinion this is how your comp. catches a virus )
Whats nice about this comp. is that if you ever have a virus or something you can do a system restore just by sticking in the disk at start-up.
I havent had any virus protection in over 5 years and rarely have a problem ( its been almost two years ) but if I ever do I just stick the disk in and its like starting all over again with a new comp.
I know there are guys on here with comp. issues so that is why I mention all of this, hope it helps.

No maintenance is being done on this end, perhaps at the host, Go-Daddy. I have no issues here at work, or at home, either on PC or laptop, but all my computers are good quality and connections are T-1 here and Comcast (Road Runner) at home.

I use a converter box to watch "Poor Man's TV" on my 19" set. There are more than 40 channels available here, but most stink.

When the coverter box program hit the newapaper, I called, and signed up. This was 4 or 5 months before they issued the credit card coupons. I got my 2 boxes, and like a fool, loaned one to my Son, who has probably hocked it by now. I have an HD TV, now, so I only use my remaining box on my VCR, to record programs. I get around 30 channels, that have a great picture, for the most part. As long as I get my PBS chanel, to watch this old house, the history detective, frontline, the woodwright, antiques road show, etc., I'm a happy camper! Oh, and I love NASCAR, but they only throw us that bone for around half of the race season. If I had cable TV, Again, I would spend way to much time in front of the boob tube, as I did 30 years ago, when it came out.

The picture is great (except when it rains or snows) but the programs suck, I also watch PBS, mainly "Mystery" and reruns of "Life on Mars" and "New Tricks".

Something that my son, the family IT guy said, that the download speed is what the IP's advertise. The upload speed is different and usually slower. When I send something with a photo attached, it can take forever to send.

From my view, network TV is garbage. We mostly use public television. My wife said," We waste too much time watching TV anyway, why should we pay $50 a month for more." Needless to say, I am never going to see Speed Vision or Jay Leno's Garage.  She did give in to Netflix which is only $8 per month. The movies are mostly B movies, although there are some good documentaries, but American Pickers and Top Gear make it worthwhile. I also signed up for HULU. That gives me access to some cable shows and it is free. Jay Leno's Garage is available on the NBC website.

I think your computer ate too much cheese for lunch and it simply "turned into concrete".
