I gave away some tools
« on: November 23, 2014, 02:45:09 PM »
Well, I am slipping, but known that for awhile.   My wife gets medical treatment every week and have gotten to know the nurses there.    During our talks, during treatment, they have come to know I work on cars.    It turns out the nurse's son is starting work at a big Case-IH dealership.   The problem is, the parents are not mechanically minded.   No tools at home, other than what the boy, just out of high school has scrounged.   The nurse, mom went to Sears and bought him a starter set of Craftsman, and was asking what I thought he would be needing.  That's like, how high is the mountain?    Told her in short that he would soon be told what to bring, what kind of tools.  Not for her to overspend right away.   Wrote out some notes for the son, about not going into debt to the tool guy right away.    Then added that bargains can be had on ebay, craigslist, the classifieds etc.   Not to overlook rummage sales and pawn shops.   Then got to thinking what  he might need right away that may not be in the (set) he received.   So I boxed up a 12in. Crescent style wrench, some end wrenches, from 3/4 down, and metric wrenches, 10-13-15.   A good Philips screwdriver and a couple of heavy straight blade screwdrivers.  Just gave it to her outright.   I'll add that he will work there six months then go to tech school for a few months, so am hoping they will start him out with as an assistant,  doing stuff like assembling new farm machinery.  It still arrives broken down at the dealership.  Haven't met the son, am impressed by the mother, hope I didn't throw the stuff away.

John,

I am sorry to hear about your circumstance. For what it is worth, you'll be in my thoughts.

I've been going to a hematoligist /oncologist where you sit in a room and a lot of people are infused with their meds.  (I'm in and out, all they do is take a pint of my blood out if some counts are off) Most there have problems much worse than mine (I wonder if most there feel that way?) It seems pretty upbeat, most looking forward to normalcy.  I hope that is the situation for your wife.

You are doing that kid a big favor, not only with the tools he will need, but by your example also. You gave a good set of tools without going overboard. Now, as he works and earns a bit, he will be adding to his tools. Rarely does anyone need everything all at once.

Way to go.

Chilly

Hey, you did a good thing! Whether or not the kid uses the tools. You gave a practical gift with a proper heart - you get the reward for that.
And you gave her good advice. There are still alot of good old stuff to be had at pawn shops and estate sales, so long as you've got the time and know what to look for. As time goes on those deals are going to diminish, but, at the moment they're still a great option.
I gave a big pile o tools to my apprentice, and I think he uses them some. He's young, wants to get a car and be cool, so, tools aren't #1 in his mind. But, everything I gave him is one less good tool he has to scrounge for. I get the blessing of knowing I did a good thing, it didn't kill me financially, and if they help him then thats another blessing on top of it all.
