Two pieces, appear to be some sort of weight. What are they for? Come in wooden box marked Federal

They look like they might be a 1 in. And 2 in. Gage block.  Are they ground on the sides?

Federal made machinists tools.

I'd agree - standard lengths as used in inspection areas to check accuracy of tools like micrometers and vernier calipers...
