Jet Bandsaw feedback
« on: March 15, 2014, 02:27:50 PM »
I'm in the market to buy a new bandsaw for my shop.  Im looking at http://www.flexibleindustrial.com/FI-Products/Jet-JWBS-Series-Band-Saws-Category/Jet-710116K-JWBS-14DXPRO-14-in-Deluxe-Bandsaw-1-25HP-1PH-115-230V  Anyone have any feedback on Jet bandsaws??  Any warranty issues?  Problems etc?  Or other quality bandsaws that are comparable?

Thank you in advance

Hey Stanley,

Welcome to the forum.  I'm not any kind of Jet machinery expert so I can't comment on the bandsaw that you're considering.  I was just wondering if you had ever considered buying a vintage machine, say from the 1940s to 1960s?  I can tell you that Delta, and other companies manufactured some really nice 14" bandsaws right here in the USA back then.  With just a little mechanical skill and some basic SAE wrenches and sockets, many of these old machines can be mechanically restored for a reasonable price.  They're fairly common and usually sell for less than a few hundred dollars.  Correct vintage parts are still available too.  Check out www.vintagemachinery.org where you can find old machinery for sale, parts, and more sound advice about old machines than you could imagine.  Good luck.

I'm with Jim.  My Rockwell 14" cost me $15.00 20 yrs ago.  It has cut a lot of wood.  All I had to do us clean it up and replace the broke trunion ($12.00)

I'd put my scroll saw up there as better than most high end models today.  It is a Yates-American manufactured around 1936.

Pictures forthcoming.

Retail is for chumps
I have one of those saws sitting in my driveway. I got it free when a friend was moving.
Its a decent saw and all. Better than many, but nowhere near as good as some.
I have an old saw in my shop already that I am used to.
I would like to someday convert the Jet to a horizontal mini sawmill. Add the riser extension and put a 10hp Briggs and Stratton on it.

Haunt Craigslist like everyone else if you need a saw. Its 20 cents on the dollar
-at most-,  and if you are in the market for a saw at all you probably have the chops to restore one.

When it comes to power tools, appliances, and many other tools?
You buy them by the pound!
If you can pick it up? You don't want it much.

I can hoist this Jet at least a little, and I am no Charles Atlas.

I would agree about Craig's List, but don't forget about auctions.  I've seen several that went for around $200.

But back to your original question.  Back in 2003 I decided to build my grandson a 12 ft. wooden skiff.  One of the tools that makes this a lot easier is a bandsaw.  I spent a lot of time looking and comparing prices of different makes and models.  I pretty much eliminated the Powermatic and Delta because of their high cost.  I finally settled on a 12 in. Jet.  Back then they were under $300 by quite a bit and were made with a cast iron frame just like the 14 in. model.  Aside from the loss of 2 in. in the throat, about the only other difference was the inability to put in a riser block.  This wasn't a big deal for me since I wasn't going to re-saw with it.  It came with a 1/2 hp motor which was more than large enough.  It was also capable of running a 1/2 in. blade.

I used it quite a bit after that when I started building a 14 ft. boat.  That one required that I re-saw some 5 in. stuff and it worked fine for that.  More than adequate hp.  The only problem I had was with the tires.  They got loose on the wheels so I replaced them with urethane ones...end of problem.

I would not have a problem buying another Jet, It is a quality piece.

Regardless of which brand you get, make sure you have a dust collector, or shop vac hooked up to it.  They generate a lot of saw dust.  On my Jet, if you use it with-out the vacuum, the dust gets all over the tires which can cause the blade to run out if it builds up too much.  Using the vacuum also keeps the work piece cleaner so you can sea your cut line easier...but then you probably already knew this.

Good luck in your search and Welcome to Tool Talk!

the imports are flimsy, made from pot metal, the quality just isn't there.  I'm with the others, buy an old usa made anything.  Watch on cl and ebay.  IMO they are going up in price too, so you may make money instead of loosing over time.  Lots of vintage parts for them on feebay.
