Absolutely a hammer as evidenced by the hole for the hammer. Note, it is not a round hole either, but the commonly found on hammer heads, elongated.

Note the original posting date. Likely sold them long ago. I have been collecting Plomb pebbles for at least 40 years but ha e never found those big sizes in the wild.

Plomb tools have a lot of history behind them, so depending on their condition and rarity, they might fetch a decent price if you decide to sell. If they’re in good shape, maybe check collector forums or eBay to see what similar ones are going for before making a decision.

I caught the drill index bug 6-8 months ago and since then have purchased a half dozen or so. The first one I bought is a twin to this index show . Mine was rough looking when acquired and thus, bought cheap for Ebay standards.  Mine was dark in appearance like the one shown.  I chose to bead blast Mine which left it looking like clean new cast aluminum.  I have not done anything else to mine yet as I am still deciding how I want to move forward with it.

Options I am still considering are as follows.

1) cold blue it and paint all raised number and letters.

2) Painting part of it and leaving the remainder the natural cast aluminum.

Personally I am a big fan of bead blasting the cast aluminum ones if they look rough when acquired like mine.

Both Morse and Cleveland drill bit companies at one time offered round cylindrical shaped wood indexes with metal tops that spin and align with the bit you need. Cleveland versions were wrapped with paper labels with blue and white color graphics. These seem to be very common and there is often one ore
two listed on Ebay at any given time. Morse versions of this style are larger in dimension and just dark stained and varnished wood. More well preserved versions of the Morse have chrome plated caps with drill sizes stamped into the steel. I chose to restain and varnish the  one that I found. Morse also made smaller less fancy round wood drill bit indexes with simple removable lids, several of which I have also acquired. I continue to add more variations of cast aluminum drill indexes that I can afford as I find them.

At this point, I have number, letter, and fractional versions.

That is the most  I can add to this conversation.

For anyone that is having issues getting logged onto the new Garagehangout.net site, feel free to email Uncle Buck direct at hlholmberg0@gmail.com.  I will forward your contact info to the admin so that he can get you and get you squared away and up and running.

Sorry it took so long to get the rebooted site up and live. The good part is as others have already mentioned the  new site was built so its existence will never again depend on one guy. Multiple people have every username and password needed to keep the site in operation which before this was never the  case and was the sole reason for the demise of GG.

I am beyond pleased to be sharing this information with y'all.

Possibly the listing on Alloy Artifacts?  I don't know if the lists are complete but they show open-end, "s" shape, and thin wrenches.

If you're missing any I can look in the garage,  I know i have at least a couple.

Classic Auto and Motorcycle Tools / Re: Oil Holes on Craftsman Teardrop Ratchets

BTW, Jim C., did you notice difference in the shape of the forgings of your two boxheads you showed? The one with the plug looks more rounded along the sides of the head (curved (convex) sides as viewed from the front), and the one with the oil port more square. Also the oil-port one's raised panel appears to be more prominent from the unraised part of the handle, at least toward the far end of the handle. That might mean they are from different periods of the boxhead or just variation from one forge tool to another.

I'm not aware of a type study for the boxheads. I have three variations (not counting curvy/square, which I've just noticed): (1) with handle "neck" recess (looks kinda like it's carved out) and "upside down" CRAFTSMAN logo, (2) with handle neck recess and right-side-up logo, and (3) smooth-neck handle like those you picture.

I originally thought the smoothies came first and the recessed-neck later, because the recess makes them look a little more similar to the successor Teardrop ratchets. But the upside-down logo made me rethink that; I currently think they were produced in the order I listed them above. (I look forward to scanning through the old cman tool catalogs when I get my set from MrCraftsmanTools to see what they reveal about order of the versions.)

Incidentally, the -VV- one above was also poorly-stamped, which may lend credence to the idea that the bad plug may have been a quality issue from the factory (poorly installed, so poorly plated).

I went ahead and bought both so I can compare them to the boxhead that presumably never had any attempt to plate over the hole.

(It's possible these plugged, unplated TD "Type 10" ratchets are distinct from the plated ones -- plugs never installed flush, never plated. Or that they are factory quality issues, or damage in the field. Comparing them to the boxhead may (or may not) shed light on that.)
