Picture Forum / Tools: Very early, very unique(?) J.H. Williams & Co. S-51
« Last post by tpm2 on May 15, 2025, 09:35:22 AM »
First post here, so, hello!

I picked this up on E-Bay not working; cleaned it up a just enough and got it working. It has some unique features, I cannot find another like it. I am trying to find someone else who has one, had one, has seen one in the last 75 years :)

Unique features include;
Recess in the handle goes higher than others, right up to the ratchet head.
Retaining nut on threaded selector post, as in the patent application.
J.H. WILLIAMS & CO NEW YORK forged in handle
PAT PEND (1/1933 - 5/1934)
SUPERRATCHET (Not THE "S...)
S-51 and DROP FORGED are vertical (all others, the markings are horizontal)

TIA, Thomas

I saw it listed on eBay and thought the same thing. I've never seen another one with a curved handle. I tried to enlarge the pictures, but I couldn't determine if it was modified or not.

I'm not sure how many years they were made but Copes Book states that they were made with 3 different handle designs. Open Loop like yours, cast iron basket weave and wood.

I saw this on an auction site so I took screenshots.  I've never seen a Gellman Polly curved adjustable.  Thus one is missing the lock screw.  Is this someone having fun with an old wrench or did Gellman actually make a curved adjustable?

Mine has one end for standard & one end for metric
Best not buy an early 50s or earlier British car/motorcycle, then, or you'll need to find a triple adjustable, to cover the Whitworth nuts.

One end's for square nuts/bolts, and the other for hex.
