I was told this is a hammer mold ( from the guy that sold it to me ). Just wondering if anyone has seen one like this before!! Thanks!!!
-
For cast and therefore useless hammers (unless they're lead hammers, in which case, yes, maybe useful)?
Nope, not me, never seen one.
-
Thanks, Bill. I'm hoping its original use is for Lead Hammers!!
-
Looks to be a mold for casting .50 cal. round balls, think muzzle loading. Unless it is huge, need something in the pic for scale comparison.
-
Hello, John k . Sorry, I usually put a ruler in the photos for scale. The cavities are are approx. 1-1/4" in diameter, and taper slightly about halfway down to around 1-1/8". The depth of the cavities is 1-1/8". Thanks, Lou

is there a hole to pour metal in to each mold? What is it made of, the old lead hammer molds I have are cast iron, 3 & 6 # hammers
-
This one is steel, it's a beast at 21 lbs.!! There is a channel that feeds each mold, so it looks like all 6 cavities could be filled at the same time!
-
any non-steel hammer....think bronze, brass, lead, or aluminum.
-
Hello p_toad. Thanks, you are correct! The hammer mold has found anew home, new owner will be pouring soon!! possibly copper hammers!
-
I'd pour lead 1st see how they turn out. Going to need a release agent for copper or it will need a hammer and chisel to get it apart. Copper doesn't flow as well as other metals
-
Thanks for the info, I will pass it on to the new owner!!

i have no idea what they use these days, but when i was a kid pouring lead (think soldiers, etc.) we used a candle and candle black as a release agent and the molded items popped right out.
