Title: Old school Bonney wrenches
Post by: bonneyman on November 14, 2013, 11:08:55 PM
I had two, and wasn't really looking for any others. But found 3 in a classifieds for a great price. So I jumped.
Here's the set of 5 I have now. Plus a cool old style oil filter wrench.

I have a filter wrench like that , don't think it says Bonney. I'll have to check the manufacture name.

Since I've started doing more of my own auto maintenance, I've been forced to buy tools for all those formerly "out-sourced" jobs. And with 3 cars - and all different filters - I've been scrambling to find oil filter wrenches to cover. This old Bonney is the older style that I was looking for to get those insanely restricted V-6 filters off with. Being able to use a 3/8" extension and breaker bar will allow me to get the things off without burning my knuckles.

Burning your knuckles over oil filters are we George??
The casual guy doing his own work at home is not supposed to need to hurry like that.
Give it another 1/2 hour next time. :)

  Oh delicious wrenches!

Naw,  I was acting like a know-it-all with a young apprentice standing nearby and wasn't paying attention.
Come to think of it, I durn near burned my arm on the exhaust pipe trying to get the pesky drain plug out. Dang Astrovan's!

Always liked Dodge V6 with the filter over the frame rail so you can't reach it, can't get a wrench on it, and when you finally get it off, it gushes oil all over the frame....

(Never seen a Bonney strap type wrench, something else to look for...)

My Toyota 22R is a piece of cake. Oil filter lays sideways, so, you put a pan under the truck, undo it from the side, no problem. Want to get one of the form-o-funnels - I think that would reduce the mess.
The Chevy V-6 has the filter vertical, tucked in the corner of the crankcase and transmission mounting plate. And there really isn't the swing room for the handled band wrenches or filter pliers-type removers. Figured this style of band wrench might work better.
Plus all the oil blows out once you break the seal, and you're right in there. Having a pit would really help...lol

Not sure if you wanted contributions to your thread, Bman - but I will add a couple things anyway - sorry about the lousy pics ...

Got 'em over the weekend with some other stuff, less than a buck apiece - an RF23 refrigeration ratchet/wrench & a 1232 water pump wrench:

When I see skinny single ended wrenches like those last ones, I think aircraft.  What kind of work did your grandfather do?

He worked for the railroad and a chemical plant.  These were all together, but not with his everyday tools, so i suspect he bought them at an auction.

Those hydraulic wrenches go for good money on ebay.
