I'm kinda smirking cause this one is a tough one! it is about 3' long, the blue washers have nothing to do with it, they with the screws hold it on the wall near my sheet metal bench along with some other old tools. American made by a well-known tool maker for their field. What is it and what does it do?
-
Doesn't have a patent date but they would have been used from the teens thru the 30's and faded away
-
could it be a leaf spring spreader for the old cars with transverse springs
-
sorta warm it is automotive but not a spring spreader. But I think this company made one!
-
It's not a toe in gauge but the company made one of them too, is used on the body but not on the order of a port-o-power. How is that for a hint? Clear as mud?
-
Looks like just what I need from the steering wheel to the brake pedal when I bleed the brakes by myself!
-
no not made for inside the car!
-
Some sort of pulley tensioner????
-
not used under the hood, it is 30-36" long the threads will allow for it to pull in or push out by rotating the center as the ends are clamped to the _______
-
Hold Door Open tool, for bodywork?
-
not for doors!
-
hold the rumble seat open???
-
no it out lasted the rumple seat
-
Something to do with setting or adjusting or moving mechanical brakes from under the car? Like it would clamp to the rods?
-
nothing to do with brakes or any of the running gear, not a electrical gizzmo either.
-
My brother (deceased) and I had the following pre-1940 cars and we knew every nut and bolt on em as you might imagine:
I had a 1920 Dodge Touring, 1924 Dodge sedan, 1933 Pontiac-Straight 8, 1937 Buick Roadmaster. He had a 1931 Chev, 1937 Chev, 1937 Buick Special.
I cannot picture a use for that device unless it helped hold an extra spare wheel on the back. :-)
-
used in the auto body repair!!!! and it doesn't work for bumpers, doors or hoods! or rumple seats!
Do not worry many a old car guy has given up!
-
For frame or body straightening in wreck repair?
-
hood alignment?
-
Superz you are getting warm what part???
Rusty already ruled out hoods, doors, bumpers, rumple seats, anything drive train, electrical, brakes, interior... is there anything left????
Don't worry you all are not the 1st to be stumped!
-
Was this used for locking the steering wheel when rear lift towing, in the days before tilt tray trucks were invented!

I just reread all posts, and "not used inside the car" rules out my steering wheel lock idea!? But I still think it has something to do with the steering (linkage?) and or towing??

The company Walker made those things too! towing and alignment equipment, but this is a auto body repair tools, ahhh it is going to seem so easy! About the only part of the car or truck not mentioned is what this used on, and they get banged up too! Are my hints that bad???
-
Hold the glass while being set and replaced.
-
What about adjusting the headlights?
-
Batz sorry not to do with class or headlamps! Do you all drive hot rods? open wheeler? anyone with wings?
You guys are cracking me up!
-
Front fender alignment?
-
Lewill2
damn close! gotta give it to ya! so you are da' man!!!!!
<grin>
Walker called them "The Walker Fender Shrinker"
So this would be used to pull a stretched fender together, then the fender could shrank in places to bring the fender back into shape. My guess is it was 1st from the late teens thru the twenties then as the hydraulic tools came into more shops this went out of production in the 30's.
Thanks for playing along!
-
Having trouble posting this pic for some reason????
I've shrunk it to under 200kb let's see if it works now.
The fender it is on is a 1936 Ford Deluxe Delivery Panel Truck.
-
nice job oldgoaly never thought of that use
-
In the UK we call these mudguards, or wings (if at the front) - fenders go in front of an open fire......
-
