Title: Craftsman leather wrapped mallet
Post by: OilyRascal on October 09, 2013, 07:10:02 PM
Firstly, I'm assuming it is proper to call this little guy a mallet (versus a hammer).  Keep me honest, please.

I'm curious what might be said of it; use (I'm assuming wood working), age, the *branding* of Craftsman markings, and the real maker.

I think this was one of sears' anniversary or special commemorative or something
Anyway, one of those gift boxed outfits they bring out around Christmas time every so often.
As much for appearance as workability.

Mallet is correct. No telling who made it.
For driving chisels etc that have wooden handles.  Plus assembling furniture or other fragile work you don't want to pound with a hammer.

There are square heads and round heads and tapered models in both configurations.
    yours Scott

The logo is the 1927 version, but Scott is right, the mallet looks new-ish.

more pics of other similar Craftsman tools acquired at same time later.  I'm not convinced they are "new-ish"............maybe display.

I seem to recall several years back when Sears offered several tools with the old logo stamped on them. This is more of a collector or display piece, as the head appears to be made of pine, which would not stand up to the type of use these mallets would normally get.

Gang,

The mallet and other woodworking tools were special editions released in the mid to late 1990's.  I remember seeing them in the stores.  Will have to check the catalogs for an exect date.  The early Crafty logo was applied purely for the "vintage look";  a bit of nostalgia.
