Title: early electric drill, anyone recognize it?
Post by: swervncarz on September 17, 2013, 08:30:17 PM
Does anyone know the maker of this drill? I know it's probably nothing more than scrap metal in this condition but just curious about who made it and how old it is.

From catalogs I have it is very similar to a 1920s drill.   Greatly resembles a Goodell & Pratt drill I was bidding on once.  Is it stuck?

I can turn it by hand, but the cord has been cut off

I don't recognize it, despite the number of drills that I have, and the literature I've looked at.  Of course, I could have seen an ad five years ago, and wouldn't necessarily recall it today.  I can tell you that the radial pattern of circular holes for airflow was used by both Black & Decker, and by Van Dorn, so that may be a starting point.  I've got a friend who might be able to recognize it - but he doesn't use computers or the Internet, so it will be a while before I can show him the pictures.  In any case, please do NOT consign it to the scrap metal heap!  If you don't want it, PM me.
Is the right-side brush holder there?  From above, it looks like it might be missing.  Is the switch a toggle, or do you turn it to go from off to on?
Here's a Van Dorn with the holes: http://www.obenaufauctionsonline.com/cgi-bin/mnlist.cgi?obenauf39/807.10 (http://www.obenaufauctionsonline.com/cgi-bin/mnlist.cgi?obenauf39/807.10), and a B&D: http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=161082674224 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=161082674224).  One site says that Van Dorn bought B & D in 1928, but both product lines existed into the 1950s or so.
