Title: Grip Lock Pliers found
Post by: Wrenchmensch on April 22, 2013, 03:10:37 PM
I bought this incomplete set of pliers last Friday at a local flea market.  The latest patent date on them is August 29, 1961 (2997903).  It's missing the plastic thumb cushion that once sat on the end of the handle (see picture in file below).  I get caught by unusual tools now and then.  There is no hope of ever finding the missing piece.  Channel Lock never heard of this tool when I asked them on line.  Rubber tub for sure on this one.

The local hardware store owner liked this tool a lot

The second image in the DATAMP entry for patent no. 2,997, 903  shows curved & straight jaw versions.  The entry also notes related and subsequent patents.

Its true you probably won't ever find that missing piece.
But I expect a short piece of that super heavy, adhesive lined, heat shrink tube would work fine.
You could even cut a small piece of steel in the curved shape and it would shrink over that too.

You'd have to paint it blue though. The stuff I am thinking of only comes in black.

Interesting piece; patented the day I was born.

Maybe you could use some Plasti Dip to sort of replicate that rubber cushion - build it up with a few coats?

I have two of those, and both have cracks in the blue handle ends, so your missing one does not surprise me.  I have an earlier (I think) version of those I will be listing on Ebay in the next month or so.  It did not have the blue handle end.
