On line auction of a Chambersburg 456 centrifugal press.

Should I get involved, or is  it too big a project?

I have only seen a few hydraulic presses working hot metal, but that doesn't look right to me! Unless you are going to be working VERY large masses of hot metal (ignoring for the moment the tonnage needed and the need of a large furnace), the speed of working of the press is critical. My guess is that this (centrifugal?) press would be too big and way too slow for a backyard blacksmith's shop!  What was this press designed and used for? in what looks like an heavy equipment workshop? Be interesting to hear what others think.

It is in a railroad maintenance shop, so large metal parts  would be likely.


I cant get a handle on how big/heavy this is.

size of a refrigerator?  car? truck?


couple tons? 10?

Uhh....the yellow thing behind it is a Pettibone CRANE

That press is HUGE....

think 36 inch tires.....

Centrifugal / rotary presses are usable as drop hammers, but, it was probably designed to be a stamping press, it may be set up to stamp lightly very fast, rather than slowly really hard.....
