The left side top end looks like a (maybe) 1/4" drive, but it's hard to say, a few more pics might help.

The thing that is odd, and seems to make it something more than just an over designed pickup tool, or a magnitizer, is the 2 notches cut in the ends of the rods. Seems like it fits into something specific. Thinking assembly tool for putting something into something in a blind hole, where the magnet holds on to it until you get it in place...

The # is a little odd for Wright, so it could be a special for something...

I agree about the P/N I have a couple of older Wright catalogs and thay are all 4 digits.

WAG- Could it fit in a soldering iron? A big Weller type, maybe, the current making it an electromagnet?

An interesting idea, not an electromagnet, soldering irons are AC, but a degausser for demagnitizing things...hmm

could it be a spanner wrench for working in a position so the fastener is in cavity.The magnet is so you don't loose the fastener down in the cavity maybe a magneto or generator
