so im about to mount the vise i bought and im curious should i reinforce the corner its on ?
my bench is made out of 1 1/2 thick by 9in wide boards.. ill take pics of bench in a bit. im not sure if i should or if im just over thinking it. my bench is mostlikelly over a 100yrs old by my estimant not sure if the wood might have lost its strength or not..
corner im putting it on (before anyone ask the reason the vise is on its head is cause i had to pull off the swivel pad and sand all the paint of the bottom and grease it so it would move (http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/xx148/dustin32690/DSCF0350-1.jpg) (http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/xx148/dustin32690/DSCF0352-1.jpg)

I think I would add a leg under the end of the bench. As it is looks to me like you will get some spring out of the bench when using the vise for any heavy work. Movement no matter how small in the vise can be a real pain.

Yup
Its going to bounce with that much overhang.
You can set the new leg back some, maybe with a small bracket supporting?
Just so you don't bump your foot too much.
If anything your wood is stronger now. More brittle maybe, but harder and stronger before it goes.

Yep, all are correct! I would mount a 4x4 post on the "under-corner with angle braces.
Then mount the vise as close as possible to it.
Mount the vise with the normal overhang, and you will be happy when you use it.

Oh yeah..... the usual overhang
This means either take the sliding jaw off, or just open it some, (but its harder to balance that way).
You want to make sure the stationary jaw is no worse than flush with the front edge of the bench.
A little bit of overhang is better.
This is so you can clamp things vertically in the vise.

Thanks Scott G for the explanation of how to mount a vise on the edge of a sturdy work bench.
I have seen some people's shop that mounted the vise not close to the edge, and screwed everything up!
Next time I get up into the old areas I patrolled, I'll drop in.
Six Rivers is God's country in my book!
Take care, amigo.

It's been my experience with vises that when you mount it and reinforce the bench, reinforce it more.I use my vise pretty hard working on vehicles and farm equipment.I have broken off my share of vises.I mount them with grade 5 bolts and I use grade 8 flat washers.Grade 8 flat washers wont bend like the plain flat washers.I use the nylon lock nuts as well. There is nothing better than a good sturdy vise to use.
