Title: Neat, but why?
Post by: Papaw on November 15, 2012, 08:10:36 PM
Today I bought a home made hammer. An Alltrade ratchet was cannibalized to make this hammer. Looks like a section of Aluminum round stock was cut and glued into the head of the ratchet.

Kind of looks like the maker may have needed a hammer more than he needed a ratchet...or maybe the ratchet was scrap and he decided to repurpose it.

So he had something to hammer on his other ratchet with?

I suppose it is as good a use for a dead ratchet as any, particularly if the teeth in the handle are shot and there is no way to rebuild it.

Alumnium seems a strange choice tho, the handle has to weigh 10 times what the faces weigh, I think I would have made a brass one...

I'd use it like a blacksmith's tool. Hold it over something you don't want to damage while you are caressing it with Papaw's 2 lb Heller. Saves on finger damage if your aim isn't perfect.
