Title: A challenge for the what's-it folks...and an eventual answer
Post by: mikeswrenches on August 30, 2012, 01:35:22 PM
See how you make out on this set of strange looking pliers.

If nobody gets it right by Sunday morning I'll post the answer.  With the talent in this forum I have a hunch somebody will come up
with the right answer.

Just a slight hint...they were patented.

Have fun.

Mike

Cobbler's pliers?

Not for leather work, not with spreader jaws on one side and pipe jaws on the other.  The teeth are too big for lasting pliers, and no fulcrum for pulling with those jaws.

Very well...

Then how about Pazzano Battery Terminal Clip Pliers?

lbgradwell,

You are correct.  Mine are marked Whitaker and the reissue patent no. 19027.  Original. pat. no. was 1,898,568.

I kind of figured somebody would come up with the answer...just not this quick.  I'm impressed!!

I'll have to pick something harder next time.

No doubt re-badged for the Whitaker Battery Supply Company (later Whitaker Cable Corporation)!

Guys,

Obviously these are more common than I thought.  I'll have to find something a little more challenging the next time.

Thanks for the participation.

Are there examples of these curved pliers with a small hammer head in place of the spreader?
I think I know where one is local to me.

Strik9 - see above - you are thinking of cobbler's lasting pliers.... Never seen this type of battery terminal pliers in the UK...

I've seen this sort of battery pliers in the UK - but I think even these are US in origin...

These last aren't really battery pliers, they are a clamp lifter.  Made to push against the battery post, while lifting the clamp off, I've seen more batterys damaged and with leaking posts from guys getting too rough pulling the clamp off.   I could actually use a pair like this.

I have a pair I would part with. Someone suggested that blacksmith's like them because you can easily clamp a railroad spike in one while you beat on it. I tried it and they were right.

If someone is interested, I am reasonable. Just shoot me an offer and your zip code so we can figure out what shipping would be.

I have a pair of these also.  I believe they are marked BESCO Giant Battery Terminal Pliers(or maybe it was Lifter) I'm not at home where I can look at them.  I like the blacksmith idea, re-purpose something that is basically obsolete.

Hey, I'm basically obsolete, and I still work....

And the way my 401K looks, I'll be working for years.....
