Title: Something a Bit Obscure
Post by: J.A.F.E. on July 15, 2012, 06:57:59 PM
Here's something that will hopefully be a bit more challenging.  The brand is Snap-on and it's now an obsolete tool in the sense it's no longer made. Whether it's still useful or not is another matter.

I'm going with a belt tension release tool.

I'll up the ante and say ift was part of a strap wrench rig.  I've got an old Bonney rig like that with only one nub on the non-drive end, but I'm pretty sure it was for removing studs.  Unless my perspective is off, the fully open position doesn't look like it would be wide enough for any belt ewxcept maybe a serpentine belt(and I'd think there would be a market for that these days).

Good thing guessing doesn't cost you brownie points on this forum, cuz I'd lose a lot of money playing Jeopardy!!

To flatten the clamp divot in an exhaust pipe or muffler so that it can be reused.  The knurled part goes on the inside & is turned with a ratchet after tightening it towards the smooth roller.  A little heat on the pipe first also helps.

That's a voice of experience there!

Winner there.  Snap-on A215 Pat 3347075. First appearance in the 63 catalog.

It's a small green alien.  Not sure where he went in all those other pictures.

Gang,

For your information-- JAFE has become known as the "Wizard Of Odd" over on the Garage Gazette.  These obscure tools he keeps posting have become his trademark.

One of my favorite tools I actually just repaired one about an hour ago. Its used to clamp down onto exhaust pipe attatch a 1/2" ratchet or breaker bar to it and bring the pipe back to a true round. Have fun :}

I don't understand why it's obsolete. Seems pretty handy to me.

I suspect it's because most muffler shops today use the "blue-flame wrench" to remove the old parts, and replace as many pieces as possible, rather than keeping what portions of the exhaust system were still good.  It's faster, simpler, and then they can use the manufacturer's warranty instead of their own.  We used to have a good shop nearby; they'd put the car up on the lift, and go along with a very small ball-pein and tap to see what was corroded, and what was still good.  The son of the original owner has taken over after his dad retired.  Now they can give an estimate without even lifting the car, most of the time, because they will replace everything from the catalytic converter back, every time.

California requires welding on commercially done exhaust systems; so there's no call for these in the muffler shops, and few weekend car warriors who are going to do enough mufflers in their lifetime to justify having one.  Well, at least not at retail.

I still have the muffler system tubing cutter that's part of the kit with this - not sure why I'm keeping it.
