Title: A 4 inch Trimo Pipe Wrench
Post by: mikeswrenches on June 22, 2012, 09:12:51 PM
In the June, Missouri Valley Wrench Collectors Newsletter, there is a picture and description of what is called "The Trimo Emergency Wrench"
--A Wrench and Screwdriver Combined

This was a combination screwdriver and pipe wrench with the screwdriver hidden under a knurled nut on the end of the handle.  It was advertised as being only available in a 4 in. size and marketed as a "useful pocket companion".

These were manufactured  by The Trimont Manufacturing Company, 55-71 Amory St., Roxbury, Boston, Mass.  somewhere around 1909.
The ad is dated December 1st, 1909

Now my question is, has anyone every seen one of these...or for that matter any other 4 in. pipe wrench?  Keep in mind it is a Pipe Wrench, not a monkey wrench.

I have never seen one.

But if you are actually contemplating using a 4 inch pipe wrench, it must indeed be an emergency....

Nope - no 4" pipe wrenches for me.  Smallest I have is a 6".

Picture of my 6" Trimo Emergency wrench. Never seen or heard of a 4 incher. Top wrench is a 4" wooden handled Stillson pipe wrench which somebody evidently made from a 6 incher.

My TRIMO 6 looks like it was made after they bought HD Smith. To me it looks just like a Perfect Handle. It was definitely born a 6 inch. I don't know about a 4".

Bus,

Your 6 in. Trimo Emergency Wrench sure looks like the picture of the 4 in. one in the MVWC June newsletter.  Maybe Trimont had second thoughts about the 4 in. size or perhaps it is a misprint.  Certainly wouldn't be the first time for either.

Thanks for posting the pictures!!

I used to have a 4" pipe wrench. I bought it new in 1985 or so and lost it several years ago. I went to buy a replacement but they no longer sell them. Don't remember the brand, but it was the most useful tool I've ever owned. It was just over keyring size but would fit right in your pocket.

As "Bus" noted, the 4" pipe wrench that was bandied about in old MVWC Newsletters was a fantasy piece skillfully cut down from a 6."  The only "original" 4" pipe wrench I'm aware of is an all metal  one that could be used for light work -- produced years ago by MARX ( the toy maker ).  MARX had a whole "pocket tools" series that were strong enough to invite use.

At one point years ago I had a set of photos of MARX tools but they seem to have gotten lost in the shuffle as files got moved from one hard drive to another.

I have a small sack of Marx pocket tools if anyone wants.
    Hammer, wrenches and saws.
I am making up a sale ad for the emporium section of the forum.
The DOE-S and DBE wrenches are pretty cute.
