Here's a mural on a building downtown near where the bear chase described on the plaque above took place. It doesn't say so on the journal excerpt, but I'll bet ol' Captain Lewis had to use his 'espontoon' to scrape out his buckskins that day :)

The Lewis & Clarke expedition is one of the most fantastic stories ever!  Only non-fiction could be so strange in so many places!  Bernard de Voto edited down the several volumes of the journals into a single volume.  Somebody ought to make an adventure/thriller movie out of this!
