Title: Need help with a drill.
Post by: m_fumich on April 28, 2012, 01:35:24 PM
I'm gonna restore this drill if I can. Any idea how the chuck comes off? It's a Jasco Junior.

There is usually a screw inside the jaw (which means you have to get the jaw to open first. Good luck -P

*beware* - sometimes the screw has left hand threads.

And often quite tight due to the rotation and years of not being removed!

I'd say the first step is a week's worth of an ATF/Acetone bath and the nsee if the chuck will spit  that bit out.  Let us know how that goes.....

If the drill has reverse, it will definitely have a screw inside the chuck and it will definitely be left handed.
It probably doesn't reverse though, from the age of it.

But you still have to open the chuck to check!!
If it has one, it has to come out first!!

After the week long (2 is better) soak in penetrant, put a 3/8" hex key in the jaws (the short side) and cinch the jaws down tight.
Now take a light hammer and knock the chuck loose by striking the long leg of the allen key in a counterclockwise manner.
You want lightweight hammer (8-10oz) and a very fast, hard blow.
 or 50 blows.
But it will eventually relent, and its the only way without damaging a whole lot of stuff.

Bigger hammer is no good. Impact wrench, definitely no good!
fast hard impact from a light hammer will work, eventually

It does not have reverse. The motor still works but I don't use it. I put that bit in several years ago. I let it sit under the car port until s couple yours ago. The last time I used it was the first time I used it. It made my hand all tingly.

It will get at least 2 weeks on JAFE Juice. I'm out 2 weeks at a time, at least. Once I set it up to soak, no one will touch it until I get home. I just need to find some place to put it. No garage or car port at this house.

Matt, most cats don't need a special place to lay around!

THAT'S what you pick up on. No comment about the drill making me feel like I had a couple bumble bees in my hand? Sure, go straight for the funny stuff. :)

Sure they do!  On top of anything, especially anything you just laid down.  It's all special to cats.
