Since Stoney was showing off his hammers, I thought i would post this one.
This was most likely a machinists hammer, shop made, used for making small adjustments during layout.
How long does it take to wear away 1/4 inch of handle with your thumb?
PS: Hammer handle is 7", head 2 1/2, from 3/4 square stock.

Hmmmm!!
Think so, Rusty?

Rusty,
That thumb notch looks 70% intentional and 30% subsequent wear. That's my take on it anyway.
-
That's nothing but an old junk worn out hammer - mail it to me :) :)
-
That notch was 99% accidental.
I have got distracted and laid a hot piece of metal on my hammer handle too..... DOH!
One of the things I really hate is dropping a hot chunk and then finding it with the soles of my shoe!!
Sometimes it sinks in deep and you have to pull it off with pliers and its just the pits!!

Kinda like a welding spark down your shoe top. You just gotta wait til it cools.

when i was engaged i always wore a ring.. one day while welding a piece of slag slipped under the ring i had to take bolt cutters to the ring and when i got it off i had about a 3/16 indent from the slag..

Dustin, I can commiserate. I was determined to finish making a brake handle for an army escort wagon a few years ago, and was pounding like a fiend with 15 minutes to go. On the upswing of the hammer, I caught a bit of slag or scale between my first and second fingers of my hammer hand, and when that stroke hit the metal, it forced the bit into my fingers for a nice little 3rd degree burn. (But I finished the break lever anyway.)
