Title: Tools Needed - Thorsen Display Project
Post by: OilyRascal on February 19, 2012, 07:07:20 PM
This will be my first focus on any tool "collection" other than those I've simply collected over the years wrenching in the garage.  I recently acquired a 4-sided Thorsen rotating display, and a couple of members have come forward offering .....well, help with filling the tools that belong on the display.  So, against my better financial judgement, I've decided to conquer collecting the tools along with restoring the display.  PM with any offers you may have on Thorsen items.  Thanks in advance for your help!

Link to thread with pictures of display board:

As much as it pains me, I'm removing the detailed listing of Thorsen tools that I'm still in search of.  I feel strongly it was being used to price hike certain items on ebay.  I don't have a solution other than pulling the list.  Please PM me if you run across Thorsen you'd like to bump up against what I still need.

I sent you the two Thorsens we discussed, and I know I have some sockets out in the shop stashed away. Just have to find them!

What style of Thorsen will be needed?

I have two Combo wrenches, but the are slightly different in style:

1/2 -THORSEN- MFD over U.S.A. - 2016

7/8 - THORSEN USA  2028

Neither one will win any beauty contests. I may have some of the sockets out in the shed, as well.

I'm just starting to watch Ebay for them, but I'd rather swap, beg, borrow, plead, and buy here ...... then use ebay as last resort to pickup loose ends.  My wife reminded me last night, "JUST REMEMBER YOU HAVE THE REST OF YOUR LIFE TO FIND THEM".

What style of Thorsen will be needed?

I have two Combo wrenches, but the are slightly different in style:

1/2 -THORSEN- MFD over U.S.A. - 2016

Keykeeper - I'm interested in your wrenches.  I have one Wards Master Quality 1/2" drive 7/16 12 point (84-4786) and one WardMaster 1/2" drive 1/2" (I84) 12-point for trade bait, or I can cash up.

I'm having a bit of style confusion, and frankly I've nearly concluded I have a carousel that is made of 4 sides with different styles.....and I'm still working to figure out exactly what is what.  Not certain the carousel isn't "home made" from 4 display boards.  I'm banging my head against the wall trying to date the boards.   I'm new at all this (ID'ing, dating, finding use) so I have a learning curve.

You have taken on quite a challenge. I would not hazard a guess as to how many variations in style there may be but do believe it would be more than 4 and you really have to watch out for the over seas stuff. Are you able to post any pictures of the board you have or the tools you are hunting?
Yes sir, quite a challenge. Good luck! I am sure there are many Thorsen odds and ends to be had here.

OilyRascal,

They are yours, just send me those two sockets in return when you get these. The 7/8 combo matches the set that dimwittedmoose had for you from the other thread about the tool boards. Noting the logo on his set is the same as the logo on your boards, I would bet that is the correct type for those boards.

PM me your address, and give me a couple days to find whatever else thorsen I have that may be on your list. I have sh.., I mean stuff stowed everywhere around this place!!!

I also have to get a few other packages ready to go out to Papaw and a few others, so will try to get them out to you as soon as possible.

C'mon everybody else, lets help OilyRascal fill up these boards!!!!!

 first is 3/8 drive 3/4 Thorsen #624J
 second is 1/2 drive 13/16 Thorsen 626NR
third is 1/2 drive 15/16 Thorsen #630 This has 1/4 dia cross drill hole on drive end. Factory not later addition.
You can have any or all of these. If interested send me your mailing info in PM
Have some other combo & oew plus rat &breaker I would be interested in trading for plomb or mossberg wrenchs or anything IHC.
I have a Thorsen combo set PC6 in a roll but not willing to part with it yet.

Found these on ebay. Sounds like you aren't set up to buy yet. If you want these, I'll pull the trigger tonight. It goes out at about midnight.

There is a 774 ratchet OE, 2016, 2018, 2020,2024,2210,2214,3025. All for $6.49.  It is not far from here. I can pick them up and ship them with what I've got.

I'd normally move faster but trying to wade through my stuff.......I mean, tools for trade bait for several people + spring garden fever = a little slow at the job at hand.  Yall don't give up on me.

Thanks for the continued visibility, Papaw.

I'm keeping the list updated as best I can, so folks don't waste their time trying to help with something already secured.  At some point I'd like to update to reflect quality targets - as their are some (that I picked up) that would NOT be my ideal display - but that's another day for now.

Again - I very much appreciate the support and assistance with this project.  To say I'm learning in this experience is an understatement.

I had a "flurry" of activity around this project for several days, and it is very possible I may have missed, or over-looked, something or somebody somewhere (email, threads, PMs, pics) - if I did, please know it was most certainly by mistaken and a reminder will get us back on track.

Papaw - thanks again for your care package.  That hat looks good on my head :)  While I might not have an exact slot for everything you sent me on the display, rest assured I appreciate the Thorsen tools nonetheless, and they have a "FOREVER" home.  This project is quickly turning into a passion for all things USA Thorsen.

johnsironsanctuary - trade package is on the way to you - please put those wrenches on a pillow at night so they may rest :)

keykeeper - two vlchk trades to the side for you - I'm sitting on them for now until I can find you some more trade bait - let me know if you want me to pull the trigger and send the two I have.

dimwittedmoose - I've got trade pics off to you.  If you don't get them (or not interested in that trade) let me know and I'll pony up cash offer just not to lose the Thorsen pieces (very nice wrench set) you've found.

25% of the tools required for the display are either in my hands, or someone's on this board.  I'd say 25% is a milestone worth noting.  My REALLY good buddy...um I mean dimwittedmoose, has a package on the way that isn't accounted for in the status or metrics.  I will update again as soon as I receive it.  Thanks again to everybody that has stepped forward to help.

In a related note - I received a MAC Sabina Ohio marked 1/4" drive 9/16" 12pt socket 182 AND a Bonney thin knurl 1/4" drive 7/16" 6pt V14 as "gifts" with the ebay package today.  Those were nice surprises.

YES - One pair of water pump pliers found by John K, no others.  I've just started looking for pipe wrenches while I'm on my shopping sprees.  That's not something I'd done before this Thorsen board.

This begs the question:  Does anybody know how Thorsen tools were distributed from a Retail sales perspective?  Retail stores, authorized dealers, particular department stores?

I don't "know", but believe there was a display rack in the old hardware store, which was not aligned with any of todays chains.

I have a pair of mystery Thorsen pliers.  Close to minty  5 inch needle nose.  But they're marked Thorsen International, and Sheffield.  I haven't found any reference to Thorsen International.

If I run across any duplicates, I'll let you know, but Thorsens are on my watch list too.  I even bought one marked India because it was cheap and I liked the whimsy of having it.

When you fill up the regular tool board, then there is the 'pro' stuff...

OK, really just adding a data point here, the Pro line is chinese made by Olympia...

(These are from my portable tools, so you can't have these ;P)

Read the Alloy Artifacts info about Thorsen, they were tied closely to a distributor network, so closely in fact, that it nearly broke them in the early days....

Most of their sales were direct to end user via auto parts distributors, in the last few years , as they have shifted to 'international production', they seem to have been content with the bargain aisles at  discount retail chains....

Thorsen seems to have missed out when the big 3 moved to tool truck sales direct to the customer, I dunno why, but it was a nearly fatal mistake...

Does anyone know if the "Thorsen Allied" name is any indication of a time when Thorsen production was 'off shore'? I have always associated the Thorsen Allied name, along with TAT and another variation or two, with Asian production; perhaps erroneously.  I looked at AA but they don't specifically address the 'Allied' markings.
They do have a lot of other information useful for dating Thorsen tools. I notice a couple of the boards have the Thorsen Allied name and wondered if OilyRascal will be looking for tools marked "Thorsen Allied" or "TAT".

I've not been able to make any determinations regarding COO and the marketing name Thorsen Allied.  The pliers John K come forward with I believe are marked Thorsen Allied and Spain as COO.

I'm still trying to find catalog information for over the years, but not having a lot of luck finding them.   I've only been at this a few weeks......Patience is a virtue slowly gained and not inherited - and I have gained a little at this point in life.

Thought I remembered buying a 1/2 drive socket set in steel box but can't locate it. Maybe I sold it. Did find 12 3/8 & 1/4 drive sockets;but looks like you have all of them except 328 (7/8-3/8 DRIVE) will hold for you with 624j socket. Also found 77Jc ratchet (3/8 drive) if you want it. also found 90 adapter (3/8-1/4) if you need it. Looks like you have located all the combo and double box ends that I have.

Jim - thanks for the great looking tools at a 75% discount :)

........ and wondered if OilyRascal will be looking for tools marked "Thorsen Allied" or "TAT".

Three of the tool boards are Thorsen branded and I am seeking Thorsen USA only tools for these boards.  The three boards branded Thorsen contain common mechanical tools (e.g. wrenches, sockets, ratchets, etc.).  One of the boards is Thorsen Allied branded.  The adjustables wrenches, pliers, and pipe wrenches are the tools on this board and the only tools on any of the boards branded Thorsen Allied.  However, this "tool board project" has, more or less, turned itself (no help from me) into a Thorsen tool collection project.  If it is Thorsen or Thorsen Allied branded, and made in the USA, I'm most likely interested although I don't currently have specific targets outside the tool boards.  I hope that helps.

Oily, how about a shot of the display with those hooks filling up?   I'm sure all are interested in seeing it.

I've pulled the detailed listing of Thorsen tools I still need to fill the display.  I feel strongly it was recently being used creatively for Ebay sales.  Please simply PM me if you have Thorsen tools you're interested in trading or selling.

Although not directly related to the display project, I want to share an awesome Thorsen toolbox I've obtained via the assistance of one dimwittedmoose.  I've regarded it with wonder, pleasure, and approval since the moment I got home today.

Here are pics of what I have.  I found an adjustable and speeder that were in hiding this morning.  The adjustable is 56728 says eurostyle with no COO.  It also has my intials and a funny finish.  I think i used this to experiment with evaporust.  The speeder is 3/8 drive and i can't make out the part # 69-.

AN ADJUSTABLE!  I believe the speeder will be either a 62 or 62J depending on size.  PM inbound on details.

Oily,
I do indeed have lots of Thorsen tools. But I know that if I wait until I finally get all "incoming" tools sorted, and a nice, neat list created to send you, it will be too late for both of us. (the earth may have ended by then. LOL.)

Anyway, following are some photos, to get us started. At least you'll be able to see what my already-sorted Thorsen tools look like, and not think that I am just lying to you. ;-)

Following is a photo of most of my 3/8 drive Thorsen sockets and drive tools. Note that I said, MOST...referring to my already-sorted tools.

Following is a photo of most of my 1/2" drive Thorsen sockets and drive tools.

Following is a photo of my already-sorted Thorsen wrenches:

Next is a photo of a few Thorsen tools which are not yet "filed" in their appropriate tubs:

Finally, here is a photo of my "problem" with making you a nice, neat, concise list of the Thorsen tools that I have available. This shot shows one tub of about 30 such tubs  I have of tools which I have acquired recently, which have been degreased and piled into tubs, but NOT yet sorted by brand name. So I think I will find many more Thorsen tools soon.

Lump,

You do INDEED have lots of Thorsen tools.  I see lots of goodies in your pictures.  I have not yet passed on a open gear Thorsen ratchet and I have no intention of starting today, so if those ratchets are available let's lock that in right away.  I'm hoping those pliers pictured are Thorsen LN6AL or LN8AL pliers.....please let it be and please hide them in a safe if they are.  In the wrench pile I see a rather large combo (with stampings obscured) that I'm hoping is a 2034, 2036, or 2040 (all 3 of which I need).  I suspect there are many others I'm searching for in the pile, but placed on each other such that its impossible to part number match.

PM Inbound to work on details.

PS:  I share your issue with having "incoming" tools sorted.  At this point, I feel fortunate if I have them out of the weather and secure.

Oily,
Ok, I'll hold all Thorsen tools for the moment. Please be patient with me, as I will be spending nearly every waking hour for the next 2.5 weeks setting up my big spring swap meet here in Ohio. It is 129 acres, and nearly sold out, so I will be very lucky if I get it done on time!

Thanks!

Wow, that Thorsen box is a beauty!
And, now I've seen my first Thorsen adjustable. I think I see another one peeking out of that last tub of Lump's. Great stuff!!

I've been piling Thorsen tools in box after box after box for several months now.  I think it's high time to dig them out and make a go at sharing them.  I will work to do that over the next few days.
