Title: Off Topic Public Service announcement!
Post by: kxxr on January 14, 2012, 02:44:44 PM
I have not smoked a cigarette in over 4 months. I was a heavy smoker and am knowledgeable of everything there is to know about it as it is a big part of my profession. I had tried Zyban, Chantix, patches, gum, lozenges, cold turkey and what ever else you can think of over the years.
I finally got the edge on it by using the electronic cigarettes that hold a liquid and create water vapor when activated. The liquid may contain varying amounts of nicotine or none at all. Of course, I realize I have simply changed one habit for another but I can see myself quitting the e-cigs someday, something I could never envision with tobacco. There is a great deal of mis-information on the internet about these things but with a little effort, it is possible to separate the myth from known facts.
There is a fairly steep learning curve in terms of management of the equipment and supplies but, in the final analysis, I figure the cost is less than 1/4 what I was spending on cigarettes. There is no tobacco smell, it doesn't stink up your clothes or body and you can do it pretty much anywhere.
Something to think about for anyone looking for a way to quit smoking. Good luck, and if I can answer any questions, feel free to ask and I will try to help you out. kr.

I've seen some have success with them and lots more have no success at all. The DESIRE to quit is the only thing that is common to those who manage to truly quit.

Quite right, Papaw.

I posted this on GG, but I'll post it here too:

Congrats to you, kxxr!

It will be 10 months for me on the 20th, and I'm never going back. I woke up at my buddy's place 10 months ago - he's also a smoker - after a particularly rough night before. I'd been looking for a good motivation to quit, so when my friend complained of feeling like crap and wanting to give up the butts I immediately proposed we both go cold turkey. He agreed, but had caved within a couple of days. Meanwhile, I decided to stop all alcohol and "special" cigarettes for a month to help with the weaning by eliminating the known triggers for tobacco cravings.

I no longer have any cravings for a cigarette even when I imbibe freely. Started running again in March after going all of last Fall and Winter without a single run - which was very unusual for me since I have run regularly for 15+ years.

And, more recently & without any formal plan to do so, I have now also left the "special" cigarettes behind too after 32 years! That was actually based more on the absolute havoc they caused my sinuses; one puff & my head virtually sealed completely. Don't miss it at all...
