Title: Big wavy handle wrench - identify?
Post by: oldtoolguy on November 27, 2011, 05:09:02 PM
I still don't actually collect wrenches, but couldn't pass this beast up for a wall hanger.
No markings found - anybody know who made it and when?
It's about 20" long, heavy, and appears to be well made.
I should also add it's either nickel or chrome plated.

It isn't too often that I am blown away by a tool, but this one is something.   No name, numbers, pat's, tells me it was made in a shop or a school by an accomplished student.   To prove his worth on a mill, shaper, lathe.  Could even have been forged to shape then finished on the rotating tools.   Have never seen an adjustable opening that was round.  Was finished, inspected, passed around the journeymen and masters of the shop, then taken home and put away.   Othewise it would be full of nicks and dents.  I could be wrong, but this is what it seems to be to me.

That pattern was used by several makers in the past.

adjustable wrench in 1842.fairly common here ,but havent seen a plated one.

Looks like something that Raymond Loewy or Brooks Stevens would have thought u[ in the late thirties or forties. That is a wrench with STYLE!

Check out this one on ebay. If you scroll down to the bottom where the good pictures are, you can see where to look for markings. This one is a Hazet and the asking price is $189. Cool wrenches all.
