Title: yet another hand drill puzzle

Today is hand drill appreciation day.

This one looked odd to me, and got odder when I saw the marks.

I haven't seen this design before and cast into the axle is FORD in script.

Might be a dealer tool, but maybe just a Ford tool.

It also could also be made by the Ford company that made the chain falls

any ideas?

I have no input into the design or manufacturer, but I will say that is one beautiful old hand drill. It looks very robust compared to others I've seen.

Certainly a Ford Motor Company item with that script logo.  Is it PL57 or FL57, not that it matters because I couldn't find anything either way.  I checked some Ford tool sites also but found no tool like that.  The PL57 may be just the number of that one part, the gear wheel.  No other numbers?
My guess is it's a factory tool as opposed to a dealer tool.   It should have some extra value compared to the usual tool kit items.

One school of thought it could be tools use at HF trade school.It's what was suggested when I was researched this hammer.

I wonder if that drill was painted at one time and if so did it only come in black ?

A very nice find, Skip.  Always interesting to see an unusual tool marked with the Ford scrip. Around my neck of the woods it's not unusual to find tools and such with the Ford mark. Your drill does not have a commercial made look. It may have been shop made at or by Ford. Maybe a project by a Ford tool maker apprentice, or Ford trade school project.

PS, I just found a nice Brown & Sharp 12 inch vernier depth gage marked Ford at the flea market last week. I post soon.
