Title: Steel crate hammer?
Post by: oldgoaly on October 17, 2019, 08:06:28 PM
A friend had a steel version of this hammer, we both cast brass ones to use on the mill or lathe. Very handy hammer.Sadly Mike passed away in a car accident a few years ago. I'd like to cast another sometime, but this one is bent, does anyone recognize this style or brand? It would be a steel hammer originally. We never worried about the name brand of the hammer as he had the original.

Can't remember the mfg, but I have one.  I vaguely recall it being called a motorcycle hammer.  A search turned up this one with a bad link.  Mine isn't marked.  Good luck

I sold the one I had to an Indian motorcycle/motocycle guy a couple years ago. The bent end is actually a tire "spoon" to remove flat tires. My recollection is there was no name on it.

Thanks for the kind offer!Got so many other things to make and repair, it will be awhile.Never thought about a m/c tool, especially Indian! Got a few of them, nothing restored pretty nice original 1936 Dispatch Tow w/big box.Mike wasn't into m/c, he probably got it at auction or yard sale.

Maybe from back in the days when a lot of fine tuning got done with a hammer?

MVWC Auction, Box Lot #97, item #11 is similar to these the listing doesn't state if it is marked with a name or not. Auction and meeting is next weekend in Troy Ohio.

Similar but the handle is wider, I'm thinking there was a name but I ran my finger to smooth the sand mold cause I wasn't thinking about the brand of hammer just making a nice smooth brass one.

VLCHEK made two sizes -- auto size & motorcycle size (1920s)  Since the sizes of tools in the box lots at the Troy auction are not shown, I'm not sure which one is there, but the overall shape sort of makes me think it could be a VLCHEK.  The description at the bottom of this page from 1912  gives the dimensions of both VLCHECK hammers ( https://books.google.com/books?id=76kyAQAAMAAJ&pg=RA1-PA168#v=onepage&q&f=false )  I think HERBRAND also had one in their 1920s auto tool kits.
