It's a Weller 302SS stainless steel brush. I've never seen a brush with bands on it before. They seem to be there to keep the brush from fraying and losing effectiveness. Is that the purpose?
The other tool is a Craftsman No.364 - big hole drill? Is that the correct name? (I put it together wrong - cutter bit should face other way).

Hello, Al. My 1957 Sears Catalog lists it as a Circle Cutter, basically an Adjustable Hole Saw. They are scary in use, probably intended for a drill press. They show 2 different ones, 1/4" shank, and a Heavy Duty with a 1/2" shank. I have one around here somewhere, if I can find it, I will check the cutter orientation. Regards, Lou

That type of large hole cutter is called trepanning. That is a good idea on the wire brush wonder if one could straighten a ugly one back up?

Hello, oldgoaly. Ouch, that makes my head hurt, I never knew the term was used for metal!!! I hope you don't mind my posting a definition (probably more than one) of trepanning.Trepanning is a method of hole drilling which leaves a center core. As trepanning consumes less power than solid drilling, it is used for drilling larger holes.Regards, Lou

Some where in the pile here is a bit in the box.
Now I googled it for spelling and found the hole in the head reference.
So if you ever need another hole in the head you know what tool to use!I have a fly cutter for the mill, but haven't found a need to cut a fly up?

I have already been told that I have plenty of holes in my head

The bands on the brush are for preventing the brush from spreading out during use. As the bristles wear down, remove a band to expose more. Really does help those brushes last a lot longer than normal. As for the fly cutter, I have several and will never buy another. Even in a drill press I break them ever time I try to use them. I use hole saws or a torch.;-(

Thanks papadan. Maybe I'll put that fly cutter in the for sale box. I have a pretty large collection of hole saws.

I have used those before in a drill press. They cut a nice clean hole. I think you had the cutter in the right way.

Check out this link http://www.leevalley.com/us/wood/page.aspx?p=32275&cat=1,180,42316 it shows a cutter like that. The bit can be put in 2 different ways to cut holes or wheels.
