Maybe related to shoeing horses?

It is a bread rasp. They were used a long time ago to remove the burnt crust from the top of the loaves. The one I had had a makers mark on the top under the handle. I found a picture of one in an English catalog somewhere.
The old wood fired ovens weren’t able regulate the heat very well so rather than throw away the burnt bread, the baker cleaned of the burnt part with the rasp.

Boy! My wife would not allow that in her kitchen! She has the tendency to burn toast, too.

A bread rasp so my friend wasn't pulling my leg ! (English expression) I wonder if they do one for steak ?
