Title: Tool Box Shipping
Post by: Papaw on January 25, 2018, 04:33:56 PM
I have not sold anything that couldn't fit in one of the flat rate boxes or other boxes in a long time. I am trying to find the best way to ship a box 22 1/2 x 11 1/2 x 12 1/2 weighing 18 pounds. Seems the mailing cost is quite high. Waiting for an estimate from Fastenal as an alternative to USPS or UPS.

Anyone know more about this ?

Also try FedEx.

Stuff it with worthless old books and ship it book rate.

That may work ! I have never shipped with them, though I have gotten packages delivered here by them.

Maybe you have a friend who has access to a shipping account at their work.  Businesses with UPS accounts get a discounted rate.  It's not an outlandish package size so it would not be difficult to handle.
I have been using UPS for those size packages.  There's a UPS store with good customer service just a few minutes from my work.

Quotes online from UPS and FedX are way too high. I can try the local UPS shipping store.

Don't know if you have access to a greyhound stop but how about a bus ride for the box?

If you check FedEx be sure to select FedEx Ground. Worst case it takes a couple extra days to arrive but it is significantly cheaper than regular FedEx or UPS in my experience.

AARP if you are a member will get you some kind of discount at UPS stores but I don't know how much.

I am no longer  a member of AARP, and won't be again ever. It is a political thing, so I won't discuss it further.

I shipped a mini-mite muller to Maine from the St.Louis area thru Fastenal. about 3' cube, made a pallet and wooden enclosure. Approximate weight was 150# They did not weight it. It was around a 100$ it got there in 5 days on a holiday weekend and it got there in one piece!  I can highly recommend shipping a crated item.

Fastenal's quote was $9 cheaper, but I was not sure the buyer had one near enough to drive to easily.

Hello, Papaw. Go to one of your sold listings on ebay, look for the Order Details, or just find a sold item in your Feedback under account details.Choose Click Print Another Label, (I believe under other actions)  and then Edit. You can then change the address, and then change weight & dimensions. This will also give you a choice of shipping options, and if the price is right you can print the edited label, get your ebay shipping discount, and the label fee will come out of your Paypal account. I use this quite often for shipping to out of town family members, the rate is usually much lower than retail, and for what you have I would try Parcel Select. Regards, Lou

Wow Lou!  I didn't realize that  we could do that.  I will be shipping a larger Priority Mail package in a week or two and that will save me a dollar or two.

I have done that. I also use the Regional rate boxes when possible. Same as Flat Rate, but cheaper.

So here is probably the only snag with using eBay to print a shipping label.  I selected a sold item and selected "Print another label".  After editing the shipping address I went to insure the package.  I am insuring the box for $300.  You can only insure for the value of that original item.  Since I haven't sold any $300 dollar items I can't insure it for the correct amount.  I had to ship via my own USPS account, but it was only about a buck and a half difference.
