Title: Dash Gauge hole cutter
Post by: Lostmind on July 19, 2017, 06:50:02 PM
I thought it was a gasket maker or glass cutter but couldn't decide how it would work.
Patent 1341067
1920
For cutting holes in a dash for extra gauges.
Another oddity is the name on the tool is " Standard Thermometer Co
https://www.google.com/patents/US1341067. "

It's for sale , just wanted to share this oddity

When I installed S&W gauges in my 1956 Chevy I used a Greenlee chassis punch. 2-1/8 inch size.  No distortion of metal. i had tried a hole saw on another car of mine with poor results. Electrical workers use Greenlee punches in their work. Maybe you could rent a punch from a tool rental place. I have tried the adjustable type hole cutters also with poor results.

I would say it was used for speedometers installation As many cars at that time 1920 did not have them from the factory. Think they call that type of cutter "trepanning"  in machine or metal shop terms.  Cool find!

I haven't tried to use it. I think it would work on veneer , but thicker wood might be a problem.

Hello, Oldgoaly. Here is the modern version of trepanning.. I will send another post with the older version. Regards, Lou

Trepanning

Trepanning is used for larger hole diameters and where machine power is limited, because it is not as powerconsuming as solid drilling. The trepanning tool does not machine the whole diameter, only a ring at the periphery.
Instead of removing all the material in the form of chips, a core is left in the centre of the hole – consequently, this method is for through-hole applications.

Hello, Oldgoaly. Here is the older version of trepanning. I thought that I had seen the word before, as in older trepanning tools. Regards, Lou

Trepanning, also known as trepanation, trephination, trephining or making a burr hole (the verb trepan derives from Old French via Medieval Latin, from the Greek noun of trypanon, literally "borer, auger")[1][2] is a surgical intervention in which a hole is drilled or scraped into the human skull, exposing the dura mater to treat health problems related to intracranial diseases or release pressured blood buildup from an injury. It may also refer to any "burr" hole created through other body surfaces, including nail beds. It is often used to relieve pressure beneath a surface. A trephine is an instrument used for cutting out a round piece of skull bone.
