John Harper ( WVTools.com ) has sent me an H D Smith "S" 660 screwdriver that needs new scales. I haven't done this in a while, so I am going to find some nice wood and make new scales for it.
Here it is as I received it today in the mail.

ah, time to let the brain cells get their exercise.
maybe someone will donate an exotic piece of material.
-
I have begun a large one (sans ears).
I don't know about you, but is very easy to set it aside for another day. And another....
-
I have set too many things aside lately. This will motivate me to get it done. If I remember , I will take progress pictures.
I have some walnut readily available. I need to cut it and see what the grain looks like.

Good wood on the cheap and this is the perfect size. Find an old trophy at a thrift shop. They unbolt easy and usually have some nice pieces of wood. Never owned one of those screwdrivers, because I never found one!

John,PM me your address and I'll send you one that will start you on your way to being a PHART.

That's the ticket! Get another sliding down the slippery slope!

what wood was used originally? I've got a couple of ton of hackberry here for firewood.
-
I've never seen that design - very nifty.
-
I don't think the catalogs ever said what kind of wood was used. They only said it was waterproofed.

Good title ! A couple of years ago I traded Scott G a beryllium ratchet for some assorted wood blanks to make Perfect Handle scales out of...
Sadly, today there they sit. Just havent made it to the top of the priority list.
Looking forward to seeing pics, the write ups on this process makes it seem easy, however the writers always have a pretty fair amount of wood working talent to begin with.

I have replaced the wood on a few, and think there is one with wings in a box someplace. Am willing to tackle another, just found a great N.O.S. rasp.

120 days since the last post and I have finally done something with the screwdriver!
Both my sons are heavy into Cosplay and ComicCon stuff and have "build days" when they can.
I was going to work on the screwdriver last month but life again got in the way.
Today they had a build day and I was able to get things situated to work with them.
I did use the number 2 son's tailed apprentices , but that's OK for now. I trimmed and cut the walnut from an old barstool using a bandsaw, then pressed it into the cavity to fit it properly. Then after more cutting and sanding, I pressed them in place temporarily, hoping to rivet them later. I may just glue these in, though, since it is an experiment.
A bit of sanding got me close enough to a good fit. I will now try to find time to stain or somehow get an old look to the scales. Oil? Stain? Heat? What?
Not a Scott G class job, but for only my second real try, I'll take it.
-
Very interesting. I look forward to seeing the end result.
Consider using rust to make a natural dark stain.
-
That's a good idea. Maybe some of the old vinegar left from another project?
-
That's not walnut. Can't tell what it is, I maybe could with a closer picture.
-
Made in China barstool that was clearly marked as walnut.
-
Walnut stain, not walnut wood.

I have an older friend who makes quite a few handles out of Sumac wood. Sumac has a really nice grain to it. It looks really nice as revolver grips. here in NY Sumac is almost a weed.

Good progress, I epoxy one scale on, when dry I drill the two rivet holes from the iron side. Then glue the second scale, drill thru my already done pilot hole. Got a nice size brass rod for rivets I have used the brass rod found at hardware stores for a toilet float bowl.

I have used the brass rod from a toilet float also.
