Sunday afternoon we heard a beeping, real sporadic, that soon turned into an unbearable buzz. Wife and I both have lost hearing in one ear each, and we were going crazy going around the house looking for it. Could pinpoint it to one room for sure, but could hear it in the kitchen too. Would have tried closing off each room, but we took the doors off to facilitate her wheelchair. After an hour of unplugging things, and checking everything that was electronic we found it. I laid the old smoke detector on a high shelf and it was echoing down the back hallway, dang. Didn't even realize it still had batterys in it. Later I started hearing another pinging sound, same go around, she was bothered by it a lot more than me. Seems when we reset the time on the microwave we triggered the food is done alert, got to love this modern age. Makes ya just want to wind up the wall clock just to listen to something that you know what it is, as long as I turn my left ear to it. Nobody else got this problem?

One of our smoke detectors failed - out of warranty, of course - by insisting that the brand new battery was too low. I replaced them all (all about the same age).

Last Friday I came home and heard a high pitch continuous tone. I wondered what it was - who was doing what nearby. It was cold, I went in the house for the night. Saturday morning Mrs. E and I head out to go shopping. There's still that whining noise. I walked over to the garage/shop and opened the door. Yep, it was comin' from in here. I walk towards the sound and - it's my shop vac! When I "park it" it goes under a shelf - the shelf hit the on button.

I just have to say I'm sorry for chuckling guys. While reading your stories I couldn't help but chuckle because it reminded me of some similar circumstances I've been in.

Back in my days of hot-shot driving my flatbed was in the shop, so I took some light freight in a Dodge ramcharger. One trip was to Baton Rouge, Louisiana with two new bicycles in boxes.
Halfway to Louisiana I kept hearing a Rmmm,Rmmm sound from the rear. Three or four stops looking all over the truck top to bottom gave me no clue since the noise stopped when the truck was stopped.
When unloading the cartons, I discovered an electric screwdriver in the toolbox was rolling on and off the button as I drove along!

Usually the only whine i hear is.... erm, not going there. :huh:
Only other strange noise is low battery warning on one of the smoke detectors and then i can't tell if it's downstairs or upstairs. The batteries are only in there for power backup anyway... :angry:

Hello, I was on a long term remodeling project for a customer , lucky for me this did not cause it to be short term!!! I had left my portable air compressor turned on, with an unknown air leak in one of the fittings. Just enough to cause it to turn on after I left, and before the owner's came home. Which of course was loud enough set off the alarm system, and the notification went to the Sheriff's Department , etc., etc. I don't leave anything plugged in after I leave a site!!!!! Regards, Lou

How about the family that still had the chirp after replacing the smoke alarm battery.
They got another battery but still the chirp.
The next step was to decide the detector should be replaced, still the chirp persisted.
The family parrot had established the routine.

I recently got a new welding helmet. First day using it I somehow set the timer feature on it an it started going off. The stupid thing confused me untill I realized exactly how it worked.
