Title: Hey, Dad, I'm famous!
Post by: bird on October 03, 2016, 08:15:36 PM
Pops asked me how the tool sales were going. I told him the truth of the matter was that I was just beginning to list things, having spent more time trying to organize things this time. Mom and pops are going on a trip for a few weeks--- good for them! But, dad really wanted to come out and see what all these tools were about before he left.  I had plans to have him help me put up a few shelves, trim some trees, ect.  But, what happened was much better.  He came in, sat down on my dusty dog haired floor, and started pouring over my "mystery boxes" of tools.... those I can't identify. With full confidence, he sat down to answer all of my questions. What followed was a surprise to him. And, I must admit, to me. He knew some answers, but not as many as I thought he would.
"How can there be this many tools I've never seen before?"
"It's a rough life, that's what I'm faced with every day."
"Who knows what this stuff is, your wrench people?"
"Well, that's usually a good place to start."
"when are you going to start unpacking the pallets on the back deck, I'd love to come and help"
"Oh, dad, you can come and help. But, your back will probably never be the same again!!"
"Who all knows about this auction you buy from?"
"Apparently, persons all over the world."
"Do most persons buy stuff like you do?"
I wanted to say, "of course they do. This is the norm for the auction. I'm not doing anything completely ridiculous. I didn't just spend every dime to my name. It's all completely normal.... just like your daughter :) "

 No Dad.
 But I'm famous.

Because it sounds like the thing to say, I started to write , "I've always wanted to be famous."  That's something persons often say, I don't know if they mean it or not. I can't think of a single reason why someone would want to be famous. ..... in my case, possibly a famous idiot. ... a happy idiot, though:)

Yesterday, I had someone that buys tools from me regularey (yes, I'm all that... I have regular customers now :) ) ask me, "Are you, by any chance, the absentee bidder from Donnelys auction?"
"Well, it's possible that's me. I'm not sure who you are referring to."
"Give yourself some credit. You're the southerner all of us up north are talking about!"

Yes, Dad,
I'm Famous.

So, I had another person I haven't been in touch with in awhile who became kind of a tool buddy through sales and then friendship write me today,
"Hey, did you win the lot with the millers no 42 saw in it?"
And, agian, today someone wrote me, " I know you bought all those tools at the auction. Here's the list of tools I'm looking for."

I swear I'm not making this up. I had a third person contact me, " I , too, live in Virginia. If you would let me, I'd love to come and look at the auction purchases."
"Seriously?????? Where do these persons get this stuff from????"

Yes, Pops, I'm famous :)  !

I got such a kick out of this today that I just had to write you folks. Hopefully, it will make you all smile. ...  and maybe you'll cheer this strange young tool gal that you've known for quite some time along. Afterall, you folks are a good part of why I'm in this mess. YOU were the tool nuts I became friends with. You folks are the ones who patiently deal with my sometimes stupid questions, help me figure out how to post a picture, and are the general joy that keeps me wanting to collect tools

cheers to you all

hi Bird, you just made my day as I was reading your note.

next time he mentions " how can there be so many tools I've never seen before."
just explain to him that he is not 150 years old.

as for;  Do most persons buy stuff like you do. "
your answer will be; they try, some do and some can't.

also, there are no stupid questions, they are asked for a reason.  although through the years, we all have heard strange questions.

p.s. may you never lose interest in old tools.

Sincerely, Frank

Being of the vintage approaching codger stage, it is a real nice feeling to see something never seen before.  Once you been around the block in 2-3 disciplines, and feel most things are water under the bridge, to discover different tools, from the many occupations is actually a good feeling, makes one not feel so  old.  Have you put up pics of this mountain of tools yet?

Great story!   Your dad has a great daughter.

thank  you , but I think it's probably the other way around .  He always encouraged me to follow what I was passionate about. .... the poor man put me through college when I wanted to drop out of high school and just be a chef.
"Bird, if you go to college and still want to be a chef, I'll pay for you to go to culinary school."
WOW, what a bad promise to make..... that didn't work out well on his end! A good daughter, I have not always been. But, I guess none of us are the persons "our best selves" could be!
