Title: Help deducing the wiring of an old electic motor...
Post by: Twilight Fenrir on August 16, 2016, 09:33:13 AM
I'm working on restoring a power hammer for my blacksmith shop, and I have an old 1-1/2hp electric motor that I want to use. It can be wired for either 110v or 220v, and I'd like to make it 220v. The only problem is, I'm not sure how it's wired at the moment. It does spin wired the way it is when hooked up to 220v,but that doesn't necessarily mean that's right, right?

One of the wires has a stamped tag on it that says T3,  so that definitively identifies two of the wires,  as the wire that has a finite resistance to T3 is going to be T4. Which leaves the other two T1 or T2. No way to know which is which?

But I'm not knowledgeable enough to know where to go from here, and I can't seem to find a diagram for wiring it up for 220v.

Any help would be appreciated.

I have to ask an obvious question...did you look for a wiring diagram on the rear of the plate that covers the connection box on the motor?  There is usually a diagram there, if it isn't mia.

Is this diagram appropriate?

Nope, no diagram. I photographed literally every piece of information on the motor.

Is this diagram appropriate?

I'm not entirely certain.... But probably! If it is, then that's all the information I need! Because I know which one 3 is, I would know it's connected to 1 in that diagram on the low volttage. So, that one would get one hot wire, and the other end of 3 is 4, so that one would get the other hot, and two and three should be twisted together! Thanks a bunch! :D
