Title: $5 in case I want to work on ignitions
Post by: Papaw on October 21, 2011, 02:36:24 PM
Since I have been out of luck lately at sales, I just had to pay $5 for this nasty, rusty ignition set.
I don't think the wrenches are marked like some to tell you which auto they work on, but they are in a vinegar bath now, so we'll see.
By the way, someone recently asked how to refreshen one of these rolls. Did we get an answer? It appears to be canvas with black coating or paint.

Given the probable age of that, it could be *actual* rubber. Rubber coated cloth was widely used for water proof articles, raincoats etc. When it degrades it isn't very strong, and oil degrades it even faster, I dunno what would be safe to use on that roll of that is the case.,if it is paint, it's worse...
I don't think the folks who designed cloth tool rolls ever thought about how anyone was supposed to clean the silly things...

Most of the staining is likely rust, which won't easily wash out....

Very kewl set tho, hardly ever see such a complete set of tools together like that, the rod with the notch in the end is interesting (carb tool?) hmm

They cleaned up pretty good.

Only one has markings other than "Spark Plug", "Distributor", and "Magneto".

One is marked AMERICAN BOSCH MAGNETO CORP , and has a brass or bronze blade marked FOR MAGNETOS.

We had suggestions, but not a definitive answer.  I think I might try some Armor all on the crispy roll I have.  It's rejuvenated other things...  Then I can bathe the tools and get a picture.
