Title: Garage sale to end all garage sales
Post by: john k on April 01, 2015, 01:58:55 PM
Am visiting away from home right now, and in mid week was not expecting to find anything once I passed thru the local thrift store.   When I went to leave, after buying nothing, there was a notice for an Estate Sale.   Got the phone book out and located the address.   Nice looking house, and big detached garage, and cars lining the street for two blocks.  Following the arrows I came in thru the side door, and found everything the folks ever owned laid out on tables in the dining room and living room.  Hard to even move thru there for all the women folk gawking and talking.  I did go thru a nice old bookcase, came up with a pair of vintage hardcovers at a dollar apiece.   At the sales desk I asked if there was anything in the garage?  "Yes there is, you have to exit the kitchen door and go into the garage thru the walk door, there should be someone there."   So I pushed my way back thru the crowd, thru the kitchen, out onto a very nice back porch, where I spied 3 very old and unusual wrenches hanging there as decor.  Not wanting to make my way back thru that crowd I went on out to the yard.   Circling the garage I found the driveway came in thru the alley, and there was a large concrete apron that wasn't even visible from the house.  Inside it was plenty dark,  and was looking for a light switch when a gentleman came in behind me, saying he would go get the lights.  What I found was not a garage, or a shop, it was a full blown workshop, woodshop, and a hobby shop of dreams for most guys.  It was two cars wide plus a third stall used as a work area.   I was gazing around with my mouth open, work bench fairly well loaded and the wall behind it.  Plus the wall at the end of the room.  It looked like a Proto dealer, wrenches spread out on hooks, sockets, plus adjustable wrenches.   Over by the drill press were several drill bit holders, plus some odd attachments and a large number of clamps.   He had a very old Lincoln stick welder, with new looking cables, an acetylene torch  with very long hoses, and the bottles were nearly full.  On a roll cart was an old fashioned wooden tool chest, the heavy kind, and pulling it out under the light I found it was full of vintage planes, hand drills, and saws.  I didn't see any prices, no stickers, tags or a thing.  So I asked the guy how they were selling all this.  He said the women didn't feel there would be much interest in the tools as it was all pretty old.  So he said make an offer.  And by the way there is more in the basement.   I had seen the basement door, but it was locked.  So back to the house, thru the crowd and asked if I could see the basement.   In a couple of minutes I was being escorted down.  Good lighting, semi finished walls and ceiling.   Back in the corner was a very old Craftsman mechanics tool box set, right next to the Baldor grinder.  Here was another drill press, it looked old and not something I'd like to drag up those steps and back thru the house.  So here I am standing around with my mouth open wondering if I could skip my next house payment, when everything sorta faded out.  What the????    Next thing I knew the alarm was going off, and I had to get to work, April Fools day or not!!!  Have a good one.

Watch out for that Turnut character, kind of shifty looking, won't make eye contact, cause he is too busy checking out the rust.

Next time, I won't turn the lights on for you and no, you can't buy the Craftsman toolbox. You really should have introduced yourself, John.

John, didn't you write a song in 1968 for Tiny Tim ?

" tip toe through the tool list?

or was it tip toe through the tulips ?
