Title: Craftsman hacksaw
Post by: Papaw on January 27, 2015, 08:11:44 PM
I have this shallow throated Craftsman hack saw and am not finding any info on it. I want to sell it, but don't want to give away a valuable tool.
OAL 16"- blade 10 3/8" long and 10" pin to pin. Twist handle is 4 1/2" long. Depth is only 7/8".

Where did Rose Antique Tools website disappear to?  They used to have Sears catalogs ( I think).  I seem to remember that the catalogs were adopted by another website.  Is that correct?  Anyone?

The new location of all those old tool catalogs (including American Axe & Tool Company, E.C. Atkins, Belknap, Bridgeport, Craftsman, Disston, HSB & Co., Keen Kutter, Shapleigh, Stanley, L.&I.J. White Co., Warren Axe & Tool Co., etc.:

 http://www.blackburntools.com/articles/rose-tools-catalog-archives/index.html (http://www.blackburntools.com/articles/rose-tools-catalog-archives/index.html)

I see the "Close-quarters" hacksaw there and its price back in 1949, but wonder if it is scarce and collectible.

Don't know the value , but I have seen several others without the Craftsman handle.

Papaw, If you're figuring that this is going to be used for a significant part of your retirement portfolio you will probably want to get more...many many more.

Name a price, and if it's fair enough to my budget I'll bite.  I like it.

I am selling a lot of wrenches that no longer interest me, but certainly am not depending on them to fund retirement!

Papa,

Interesting Crafty tool, looks to be fairly early.  I may be able to help you date it.  Can you supply any of the stampings on the tool (i.e. model number, makers mark, etc.)?

The only thing I see on it is CRAFTSMAN on the handle.

On the off chance that Oily or 1930 decide they don't want it I'd would be interested.

Papaw,  Thanks for the Blackburn link - I saved it.

I looked on eBay but there were only the later style with the aluminum handle selling for around $7 -$9.
There was a Snappy with a similar handle but different blade holder arrangement - that sold with another saw for around $30.

Papaw,

Look on the round bar above the blade; I'm not sure, but it looks like there is something stamped on it.

Papaw,

Looks like I found it... model 3555 "Close Quarters Hacksaw".  Sold between 1946-1958, it originally sold for $0.69 and last sold for $1.55.  There was also a smaller 6" model sold during the earlier years.

It looks to me like you would be best served by using recent ebay sales  for a price guide.

Good luck...

It looks to me like you would be better off listing it for recent median ebay sales price.

Ill give you an even 1.60 for it than, money in the bank and hoping you will accept a personal third party check drawn from my account in Grenada. :)

Gary, I went after it with some 00 steel wool and still don't find anything. I have not done real macro photography in a while, but I broke out an extension tube and shot  some close-ups. All I see is loss of plating.

System is not letting me post pictures right now.

Papaw,

Don't worry about it.  Not a big deal.  And I posted much of the information, above, that you might be needing.

Using a similar formula to one that another member recently posted;  1946 to 1958 realized a gain in value of 225%.  Every twelve years it more than doubles in value.  Today it would be worth $66.88 .  Congrats Papaw!

But only if someone wants or needs it very badly would that price ever realize.

That is a great little saw.

Papaw,

+1 what bonneyman said.

It is a very handy saw when your up against confined spaces.  Depending on what you do, this might be something that could be used a lot.

That said, most folks, including myself, can get by with a standard hacksaw and can go their whole life without needing a close quarters saw.

So I'm guessing the market for a close quarters hacksaw is likely to be relatively small.  Of course, I could be wrong.

At any rate Papaw, I'm sure you will make out just fine in finding a new home for this unique vintage Crafty hacksaw; happy prospecting.

Think I might keep it just to use someday instead of the plastic handle thing that uses regular hacksaw blades. I do have another style with a deeper throw that is getting cleaned up soon.
