Title: Not a tool, I think.
Post by: pitw on January 26, 2015, 10:03:11 AM: Howdy guys, seems much has changed here since I have been away. I found this thingy in a box and can't for the life of me figure it out. I'm sure it will be simple once someone tells me what it did.
It's made of brass, the two halves are held together by the little tits on the locking rings, there is threaded holes in the Halves that I assume would hold a scew to keep it locked in place[screws were missing] and it is bothering me.

Maybe some sort of shop project for an apprentice machinist, to display his skills?

I'd use it as cool little "cash stash" on a shelf....nothing beats hiding something in plain sight!

Forgot the end picture which has a whack of numbers on it. I might throw it away once I learn what the heck it is. I've asked many places then remembered this one.

The "parts" numbers seem to indicate this was mass produced. I wouldn't think a "show off " off piece would have that many codes.

Hehe, yeah, no idea... Definitely cool though. The stamping would leave me to believe it is other than a one-off piece as well...

Is there any sign of wear around the little nubs on the end? Like it might have been cradled in something as it rotated?

The ends of the inner chamber have a different patina than the rest of the metal. The slot could feed a string, or cable of some sort out of it off of a spool... Like a giant sewing machine bobbin....

What kind of line would be fed through it, and why is beyond me... But I suspect that's what it does.
