Title: Elgin Alligator Set
Post by: Lewill2 on November 03, 2014, 06:21:59 PM
I picked this up in the Browns Tool Auction this weekend. Boxed set, Elgin Alligator wrench, dies and tap wrench insert. Chrome plating is almost untouched. The plain jaw is marked just a little. This is the first set I have seen and one of the cleanest Elgin wrenches I have seen.

Man that is as close to mint as I've seen. Looks great an to have a complete set is even better. Great buy

Lewill2,  thanks for the feedback on that set.  when I was reading the writeup in the book,
I was wondering if it was as good as stated.

glad that you got it and shared the review.

The moveable jaw was gummed up but came loose with just a little light oil. It is a clean set.

Nice set.  I've never seen the set before.

I found this online on 1/30/13.  Don't know who posted it, but it looks like Rusty's handywork.

A "complete set" would include all the dies assortments they were advertising in 1912:

I don't think anyone has gathered all 25 different dies listed there.  (1912 HARDWARE REPORTER has the most extensive set of ads for ELGIN wrenches I've seen -- it was the year that Illinois Iron & Bolt Co. took over STAR Mfg.  -- one of the founders of Star Mfg.  died that spring.)
Here's a link to another HARDWARE REPORTER ad that includes images of the ELGIN in leather roll or the wood box set Les acquired:

That would be cool to find one of the leather roll sets in this condition. Thanks for those links.

Finding all the dies could be an epic task.  Few people would have a need for all of them.
