Title: Thread cutting dies
Post by: john k on August 31, 2014, 12:24:21 PM
From the auction a week ago.   An interesting set of pipe thread dies, didn't get them as I already have 1.5 sets, and how often does one get to cut threads on iron pipe these days.  Saw it go for $25.  A rather interesting way of having it all together.

I have a Craftsman set that looks to be the same.

Did it have a maker's mark?  I'm curious who actually made the CMAN set.

It says REED on the ratchet head, and by the way it fits in the holder, would guess it is the original.

Been wondering why they spaced the place ment of the die holders that way, then it dawned on me,  the ratchet head is the heavier end,  the spacing is so you can carry it.

Patented in 1934 , 1961450 , "Tool Carrier" , by Thorvald Petersen, Erie, Pa., assigned to Reed Manufacturing Company, Erie, Pa.

(not in datamp at all)

The patent also notes that one die is intended to be stored in the head..
