Title: Needed - New Britain 12pt 1/2"drive sockets: 1/2", 3/4", and 7/8" (shallow)
Post by: Jesse S. on June 09, 2014, 08:27:50 PM
My father in-law has been talking for years about how he needs to complete his set of New Britain sockets, so this father's day I'd like to do that for him.  He's only missing (3) sockets now, which are 12pt 1/2" drive shallows sockets, sized 1/2", 3/4", and 7/8".

I've tried searching Ebay, and Googled a bit, but I'm not a serious tool collector myself and don't really know where to look.  Any advice on how best to go about finding these kinds of tool would be greatly appreciated.

Ask the members here, many of us hold on to odds and ends USA made tools.

I myself may have one or two to fill those gaps, I'll have to check.

Good luck!

I have a 6pt 1/2" dr 7/8" socket, 2 line kind.

I have had 2 patterns of New Britain sockets. Older (I think) had a single knurled line, about 1/4" wide located above the bottom of the socket ~ 3/16".

The more modern looking socket has two lines cut into it, one above and one below the verbage.

Thanks for the quick replies! Thanks, as well, Chilly, for the info on the banding.  The sockets he has have a single band (I think) about a 1/4" from the base, and are numbered as follows:

NT-614 (7/16)
NT-620 (5/8) ,
NT-1222 (11/16),
NT-1226 (13/16),
NT-1230 (15/16),
NT-1232 (1),
NT-1234 (1 1/16),
NT-1236 (1 1/8),
NT-1240, (1 1/4)

He has some others in there that are New Britain, but didn't have numbers on them, so they may have been from an older set, or just worn.  They all look similar to me.  Is NT the series that these sockets come from, and the number is for that specific size?  This is really my first foray into the world of tools, so there's a lot I don't know.

Also, here's a picture that my brother in-law sent of the set.  He wasn't really sure which set I was asking him about, so he took it at an angle to include the entire wall, which didn't do well for details of the set in question; the shinier ones are from a different set:

I managed to find a set on Ebay that included the sockets he was missing.  His first words when he opened up the box: "Where in the world did you find these old things?"

Thanks for the help, folks!
