Title: What Happened to the forum design?
Post by: eddie hudson on April 21, 2014, 01:40:19 PM
Windows has been doing alot of updating the past week so I'd like to blame them. For the last couple of days all I get is the Tool Talk logo and everything else is text. It's a real PITA.

Some of us had trouble yesterday- getting no connection and a white page only saying  "pageok'

I got that on my laptop running wireless, but not on a hardwired PC. After rebooting the router all seems OK now.

the website is the same for me, I know the problems with updates, I'm running in save mode with internet connection as my "microsoft" virus software is corrupted  can't fix it, lucky I was figuring "they" were going to screw xp users somehow, So I had downloaded Avast so I'm protected. Really tempted to go to a mac.

I haven't had any problems like you guys describe. However I have been doing everything on my phone lately.

I had this happen early yesterday morning. But it was fine when I tried again a few hours later.

Apart from that, I have experienced no other issues...

The 'pageok' thing is a godaddy hosting glitch (web server dns doesn't match site name, so it has a hissy fit on the server and won't give out any pages) so it was not your computer...
(Why it says pageok instead of pagenotok is a deep dark mystery...)

The text with no background happens when you get the web page but not the layout file that goes with it (CSS stylesheet), slow server, slow internet, browser weirdness can all do that...(reloading the page often will fix...)

Strange phases of the moon also seem to factor in here...

I'm still getting the 'pageok' alarm with a blank page, but only when I click the Show unread posts since last visit. Which is a bit annoying.

What should I try to make it stop doing that?

I started having trouble loading Yahoo also using AOL on dialup. I switched to an unsecure wireless network and Tool Talk comes up fine. Unfortunately I don't trust it so I have to use AOL.

So far no problems using an iPad and Safari.  When using my PC with XP, and Firefox I get it all the time.  Also extremely slow.

I haven't had a problem one on my --really old-- Vista, cost $200 delivered way back when I bought it, on my free hand me down monitor that works-fine-but-I-can't-turn-it-off-because-the-switch-is-broken

Sounds like many of you guys have foo-foo-itis.   Its your new stuff at fault.
    New stuff sucks.

No, no, you must have the latest and greatest, because it, uh, well, it can also , uh, well, it's better at, uh, well, it's faster when doing  um..., umm....

It's really shiny, ok?

I have fast and best and it works.

It's my living, and even the fastest machine is slow when you design in 3D. For me its a trade off in productivity.  I don't mind a just out of college engineer on an older machine, they don't cost as much and they can't go that fast.  I measure tool cost in productivity and, for me, good tools = more $. A lot more than their cost.

Now I wish I was a driver.  I could justify a BMW.

Yeah, 3d rendering is brutal, so is OCR, (I admit having a shiny 8 core machine for ocr'ing things ;P)

But for typing, my old , now officially obsolete XP machine more than keeps up ...;P

I am not sure of his plans for it, but my son has a 10 cubic in 3-d printer ordered and paid for.

His normal projects are anime characters, related objects, and Ghostbuster stuff.

Those 3D printers have come a long way.  Barrels of fun, and prices are dropping.
I'll try to time it right and get one eventually.

Bottom line is with my different formats I haven't seen a different forum.

Last week I changed my forum theme (1205 people used the default and I was the only one using something else.) It didn't look that great but it was better than what I had.

I just changed things back to the default and things are back to normal.

Very strange???
